I get water sitting on the inside of the hatch rubber right at the bottom near the latch. Haven't noticed it anywhere else, not making it to the spare tyre well.

Not everyone reads forums & forums are not always correct in the information they provide. Each case/fault should be counted as individual.

My tailgate has filled with water since i got the car last year. Been to the dealers 5 times for it and eventually they said there is nothing they can do with it. Now after it has rained i go and empty it out rather than leave it sloshing about. Funny thing is the bonnet does the same thing, if i open it after it has rained a load of water pours out of the holes all over the engine/battery/etc. Can't win with this but have to keep laughing though :D

Thats simply not acceptable!

I know its not but in all fairness to them they sorted my other probs (though mileage keeps flashing randomly) and they said there is nothing more they can do (changed high level light). They couldn't find where the water is getting in. I ended up sealing round the wiper grommet and badge fixing myself but water still gets in. Resigned to the fact that i will spend the rest of my ownership time empting the tailgate every time it rains, oh well.:(

Re: Grande punto water in tailgate

I have suffered with this problem on 06 plate 1.4 sport and despite recieving letter from dealer and fiat uk saying this is normal and two botched repairs one to wiper gromet and second by applying silicone sealant to spoiler and high level brake light.I had to threaten rejection of the car before they finally replaced the tailgate and problem is now sorted this however is not the end of the story this vehicle has visited dealer 15 times spending a total of 28 days in the dealership and also broke down recently due to frozen air flow sensor which is also due to low mileage covered by this vehicle.I am now in the process of rejecting this vehicle for the second time due to poor quality and awaiting finance companies response i was told the other day that fiat stood for fix it again tony and in my case this is certainly true any advice or help would be appreciated.

Hi Martin and members, this is my first visit to the Forum, is your Fiat Dealer by any chance Souls of Milton Keynes?, we have a Grande Punto 5 door multijet as my wifes mobility car, it was picked up in November 2007, sometime around May 2008 I had the same problem with water in the tailgate, when you lifted the tailgate it sound like a couple of pints of water sloshing about, on lowering the tailgate again water poured out of the right hand buffer hole at the bottom of the tailgate, although which side the water comes out, of depends on the camber of the road.
I took it into my dealers who came out with the same excuse that water was meant to drain out of the buffer holes and the other holes mentioned. These adjustable buffers are there to stop the tailgate rattling (hence them being threaded) I informed the service manager that I had spent 25 years in car and van manufacturing & and a further eight years responsible for warranty at Vauxhall & a Audi &VW dealerships, and with my 30+ years of experience to draw on, I did not accept for one minute accept this excuse.
Yes, I would agree that the other drain holes are there IN CASE any water does get in so it can get out, but tailgates are not meant to have water in them for the obvious reason that it doesn't do a lot for corrosion resistance (n), I also agree with the Moderator that there are also drain holes in the door panels with the object of letting water out, however there is a subtle difference in that doors, because the window glass slides up and down, have seals that stop most of the water and any dirt in the water getting down inside the door, but as this can never be completely watertight, water and dirt get past the seals, which is the reason for the drain holes, namely to let the water out, at the same time the dirt that is carried down will eventually block the drain holes unless kept clear, this is not the same scenario for the tailgate.

My GP has been in 5 times for this work to stop the leak, and my car has spent 8 days altogether in the dealership, this is a considerable inconvenience as it's a 30 mile round trip every time the car goes in, on top of the 8 days there were a further 3 for inspection; after the 4th visit of 5 days just before Christmas, and for which the dealer was unable to loan me a car, the high level brake light had been resealed, aperture rubber had been removed and refitted, the tail lights had been removed and resealed, along with umpteen water tests and other various methods used to try to stop the leak.
Come mid January 2008 it was leaking again, I wrote a very stroppy letter to the Managing director appealing for him to fix it once and for all, even if it meant calling in a Fiat Field Engineer.
I then lost the car for another 2 days during which they found that the high level brakelight seal was damaged and the only way you can replace it is to replace the complete lamp, which they did, they also replaced the seal around the wiper motor boss, and informed me that my small magnetic GB plate that I had attached to the inside of the tailgate at the top, was also laying on the seal and allowing water to drip onto the inner wheelarch cover, I hadn't noticed this, but I didn't feel too bad about it as neither had they, when the car had been in during December the GB plate was in the same place and they hadn't noticed it then either.

Earlier this week I opened the tailgate and guess what, yes, water came pouring out again, I rang the dealers again who promised to come back to me the same day but didn't, I rang again today and was informed by the service manager that he had spoken to Fiat and they had repeated the story "that the water is supposed to come out of there":bang:
I then Googled Grande Punto Tailgate water leak" and found this lot:eek:.

I immediately contacted Fiat Customer Services and a complaint has been raised, I've insisted that a field engineer inspect the car in my presence.

I rang Souls again and spoke to the Service Manager and informed him of the thread I'd found on this forum and it was obviously a well known problem, he said he would look up on the Forum tonight, but insisted that our GP is the first one has has come across with this problem.

From what I understand from a young lady on service reception, using water to find the leak consisted of one man sitting in the boot while another poured water out of a watering can over the outside, she thought this was hilarious, I wasn't impressed, even going back nearly forty years ago to find water leaks, green coloured water was sprayed at high pressure onto the outside while a special light was shone on the inside, and any water leak was shown as a flourescent green trail so that the point of ingress was easy to find.

PS. Has anyone yet had there water leaks cured to their satisfaction? or are the Dealers and Fiat still in denial.

That's where mine started so keep an eye on it!

Souls of Milton Keynes ?????? hmm ....... step in Chris.

FWIW, I too have the tailgate water leak, but I cannot be bothered to fanny around at the dealers and see what they can do. Maybe next time I'm in I will point it out and see what they say. After Richard Hardie took over Gainmanor I have nothing but praise for them, so I might let them have a go at fixing it.

As I have advised under another thread, I had this problem for almost a year on my GPS. Not any more. (y) After five trips to Fiat Salmons in Colchester they have finally managed to rectify the problem. They also tried re-sealing the brake light unit, wiper unit etc without success. Finally, the metal seam around the inside of the boot door was re-sealed with silicone and for the past six weeks since it was done, I have been water free!

It does pay to persist with this particular problem. Good luck
