Re: tell me about Halogen hobs

Re: tell me about Halogen hobs

Induction's what you want if you can afford it. Not cheap, but can convey a bloody huge quantity of heat in an incredibly short time - I think it out-raced a kettle for the same quantity of water (at the same temp) when I last checked my parents one.

Plus they don't how heat as much as ceramic / halogen, so can go from boil to virtually off really fast and back up again equally as fast.

I seem to think its about £2k for a decent 4-ring induction hob though, and you may need to replace all your pans, as it requires magnetic metals

Re: tell me about Halogen hobs

cool sounds like it. some on ebay cheaper than 2k :)

can get a single ring one cheap http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/INDUCTION-HOB...itchen_Ovens_Hobs_Cookers?hash=item35a5bd6e0a

Bloody hell that IS cheap. TBH Id think of finding a way to wire that up externally for a BBQ or something.

My comment re: 2k was for a reputable make (probably German). You could pick up a cheap copy for much less as you've demonstrated.

EDIT - Hang on, that 2k was BS. I'd quite clearly forgotten that it was still really expensive when that figure was mentioned. £700-800 for a AEG one's not bad; although given a normal halogen or gas one tops out at £200 it is pretty costly. Still, if I had enough free when fitting a kitchen, I know what Id go for.

iirc Certain Steels work on them also. Not 100% sure though. Got them in the New kitchen that opens next month at job #2 :p

one seller on ebay says cast iron pots work on them too

Might be Iron then.

Re: tell me about Halogen hobs

A mate of mine did the kettle-vs-induction race and needless to say, he no longer uses the kettle. The only thing to be careful of is to not store anything hard and heavy in the cupoboards above and immediately adjacent to the hob. Drop something like a glass salt grinder, and you are looking at a bill for a new hob.

Of course, my missus doesn't like gas, so she will have an electric hob in the house, and I'll have a whacking great Weber with multiple side rings in the garden.

You could try http://www.clearance-comet.co.uk/ for a hob? I'll be looking there when I get a place of my own (rather than rented) some go for quite cheap but look around before you put a bid in, some of the RRP's it shows are inflated :)

I love cooking on gas for speed but just doesn't look as nice in the kitchen and is more of a pain to clean.
