General TACHO REV COUNTER GAUGE-Problem :(

General TACHO REV COUNTER GAUGE-Problem :(

to make sure that it works go to engine.
Disconnect first coil connection (this one which is closer to radiator)
Take single wire from signal cable from rev counter and put inside to pin "-", (you should see two signs on coil "+" and "-") then put back coil connector but make sure that this single wire is still connected and on right place (don't push too much...)
then connect right cable from tacho to any 12V+ (could be battery) and ground (make sure that it is right one - I've got two red and black cable, one is for light and one for counter...)
If techo works it should be about 400-500rpm instead of 800-1000rpm as is only single signal...

Wow, great show on You-tube. Many, many thanks for more than useful explanation to Most Easterly Panda …..Real real, genious……

My panda is 1108, MPI, (2003), with engine code 187A1000, so ECU is not placed under the dashboard- in cabin, it is placed under bonnet, close - right side of- engine, and I think it is different type of ECU…… I think at least, connectors of ECU is different - most likely to Puntos, and Nuova ECU. I will try to place some photos, later….
Anyway, Pin No. 23 is originally - connected by wire to fuel pump interrupt switch in cabin (see list of pins, and explanation). Logically, if we have interrupt switch, already - connected to pin 23 (and if our ECU is not under dashboard, as yours, this switch is still - connected to proper pin on our ECU), I think it is easy to get signal (for 4 cylinder rev), directly from interrupt switch in cabin, than to experiment with micro-pins on ECU, under bonnet. (New ecu pins is much, much- smaller, then previous, and it is placed on two, twin-rows –micro-connectors, looks like monitor connectors on PC motherboard?

Of course, Most Easterly Panda, thanks for your great attention and instruction.

Pandaki, be sure, about pollarity of rev, and not to use plus cable of backlight lamp as a signal cable for your rev. I think that your rev coud have four wires:, Ground for rev, Plus for Rev, Signal for rev, and Plus pole for backlight lamp inside rev. Plus for backight shoud be connected to vehicle position light - switch. Try to upload som Pic of yours.

So I tried it from the coil and it works:) but showing only the half:mad:.

That means that the ecu has diferent mapping or there is no output for tacho?

I also tried to take the singal from the cut-off swich (black-purple cabe) but no result either.:(

Any ideas?

Are the pins on all these the same?

Hi
aca - are you sure that you've got old Panda (classic) ? - I've never heard about Panda Clasic with 1.1 MPI engine....

Pandaki - I've just tried to connect my tach rev to this interrupt switch (also black-purple cabe) and nothing... :(
I couldn't try second cable (black) because was sealed in plug...
So now is only one last change - connect to PIN23 ....

Regards

Jakub

Well, I'm not sure about pin 23 in my car. I mesured with multimeter both the signal from the pin and the coil and the voltage is diferent. Both of them change with the engine speed but the one from the coil is higher. Maybe the signal from the pin is not strong enough to move the meter. But is the voltage or the frequency that the gauge is metering?

Conecting to the fuel cut-off switch is not easy, it prety tight connector. But I don't want to start stripping cables for no reason. If it doesn't work from the pin it won't work from the cut-off swich either.

And I HAVE to meke it work, for now I have two nice litle holes on the side of my dashboard made for a reason!

I checked voltage on cut-off switcher...it was just 0.14V

BTW

Fortunatelly I didn't do any holes....;)

Hi all. Sorry to hear your having problems getting your tacho's to work. I've got a day off of work tomorrow so will take my wiring loom off of ecu to check its pin 23 I've got it connected to. I'll take another vid/pics to show how I've shoved the wire in, as I know that I had a loose connection at first, so perhaps its just the way you might have placed your wires:confused:

The only other pin I might have connected it to is pin 28. I remember trying to decided what one to connect it to when doing it. But from what I remember it was pin 23 because it was an 'output' from the ECU and not an 'input' to the ECU like pin 28 is.

I'll confirm tomorrow.

Jon.

A few more pic's until I take some more for you tomorrow.

Hi Jon

From the page you have posted you can tel that is deffinitely pin 23. I was reading some posts in the cinq forum about rev counters and they also talk about pin 23. But they are also saying that pin23 doesn't work in immobolized cars, so that might be the case in mine as well.

Tomorow I will duble check the connection to the pin (eventhough I'm sure it's ok) and I will also feed another cable just in case it's the cable not good. If nothing works monday I'll take the car to the store that sold me the tacho to sort that our (fix it or replace it)

OK. As I said I had a loose connection at first. I had to strip a fair bit of wire and really shove it into the ECU female connector on pin 23 for it to work well.

Hope you get yours working. I can't see how imobiliser would stop it from working though. This is the pin after all that Fiat use to fit the factory fitted rev counters to when the ECU was fitted to the cinq's.

Good luck. Jon.

I think that's the best way - they should provide you right one for this type of engines...I've bought from ebay and there was only that it works with 4 cyl engines, so I thought that there will be manual for all engine's types:)

But I'll try again with ECU:)

As I can see from the fotos I have another version of ecu

IAW 16F.EJ
Panda 1.1 4x2 4x4 ECE fase 2:confused:

jangcy I thought that yours is working already

We'll se tomortow:shrug:

Yes, my was working but only with coil connection :(

Nice picture - try to find some more on SC/Punto forums - they've got similar ECUs... (I think:)

Sorry, but I am pretty sure, here is picture of mu Panda 1.1 MPI ECU, and his position:

I've just reaslised out say that yours is a 2003 model, nice and new (compaired to ours):D.

The engine looks almost identical to what is fitted in the new 5-door Panda from what I've seen in the show rooms.

It might be worth popping over to their area as they might have similar problems, as the base model 'Active' doesn't come with a rev counter and they might have had new Panda owners wanting to fit them.

I hope you manage to find out what pin it is. I personally think its a bad place that Fiat have put the ECU there, out in the elements so to speak. I remember see this type of set-up on the mk1 Punto and thinking it dosen't look well thought out.

Jon.

Yes, I figure, the engine code is the same as basic model of Nuova, i.e. Active 1.1. or similar. Also Sei 1.1 Abarth, I think....
Also agree about position of ECU.
By the way, This is not pic of mine, I only use one picture from lokal dealer here just to show Ecu under bonnet. I will put mine a.s.a.p. here. Its white and better loook, then red-one shown.
Anyway, newer or older version , legend - is legend (almoust 5 million produced over total production cycle).
Thanks for Nuova Active forum -idea, may be they have some idea about pins for rev?
