Did a search, found some threads with a similar issue but no one posted about a solution other than "I will replace X and tell, bye" and then nothing  So here is the problem :

While driving, engine hot and in working order (80km trip) the coolant needle drops to zero, too fast to be cold water on the sensor (needle reads just a little low than the lowest value, like the instrument was turned off). Radiator fan turns on, engine check light turns on.
After a pair of kilometers the needle suddenly came back to life and working, fan turns off; engine light keeps staying on so there is indeed an error code saved.

Yes, my thermostat has started dying but it's not alterady that bad, just a little slow but keeps the correct temperature (fact is, when the needle started working again, the temperature rose back to normal), I was planning to replace it the next month so the sensor may just join the parts list next to a well deserved engine service (and of course new coolant).
A friend here at work suggested also the map sensor, but the car was running like normal when the issue came up (although I do expect to find an incongruent air temperature warning). The engine is the 1.2 60HP EURO4 - cable throttle - iirc the ecu should be a 4AF, the large aluminum case one next to the battery.
Shame on me, I lost my bluetooth obd scanner so I'm back to old style guesswork until I get another one

Sounds like a water temperature sensor fault to me, the safety/limp strategy -fan immediately switched on- checks out ... but I'm too fond of little fiats electrical issues (and mysteries, ghosts, paradoxes :ROFLMAO: ) so I ask to you if this is a common/known issue that maybe has a more esoteric cause like a bad grounding or an infortunate placing of connectors and so on, just to be sure and eventually check there in advance.

Probably simple, easy test and explanation here

Thermostat it full open

Driving fast low load after the engine has warmed the temperature has dropped below 60 Celsius

ECU correctly detects this as a problem

Switches fans on full, needle on the gauge drops

Could be also a missing thermostat gasket, but the way the needle dropped was so sudden it looked like the sensor was unplugged, made me think of an electrical problem.
It's also very true that modern coolant temp gauges (and petrol level too !) are designed to keep a stable value even if the real data is noisy, so the sudden drop could also have been the instrument "lagging" and then closing the gap with the real water temperature all of a sudden  I did not take that in account.

Maybe I'll wait to replace the coolant sensor and just replace the thermostat, a sensor can be changed without losing much coolant if you're fast enough:LOL:

Fans on max

Yes it cools very quickly

Just Syphon a bit of coolant out with a pipe, then there no loss

I removed the coils as well, technically not needed, but it make cleaning up the surface easier to see and do, done it both ways, it's my preferred

Shouldn't need a temperature sensor, do the thermostat first. Fingers crossed it's all that's needed, save a lot of time and money, access isn't great as it's at the back right of the engine, all has to be done by touch

I’ve got a small manual pump with a cannula, dedicated for removing coolant when the need arises 😎

Darn, I still didn’t check the engine, is it the infamous version with the sensor plugged in the intake manifold side ? 😓
The other car (Grande Punto) has the version with the sensor on the thermostat body (and the infamous plastic spigot)

Every Fiat thermostat I replaced in the last few years came with a new sensor...

Should be like this I believe on a 1.1 and 1.2

Later euro 5 are combined same as the 1.4

2011 certainly is

I assume the cross over is the euro 5 but I could be wrong

Update : finally found some time to change the thermostat, the sudden drop of the temperature indicator on continuous light loads disappeared.
The old thermostat was correctly closing but there was no ring gasket and being old probably was also a bit slow.

New thermostat, new coolant, new oil and filters, now I've got a happy Panda :D
