Hello. I own a Grande punto 1.4 16v sporting. Recently I had its battery changed as it was old. New battery is OK, the alternator works fine (gives around 14v), but...
Since the old battery started showing symptoms and after I changed to the new battery I have a strange starting problem. When I turn the key to MAR position, all the light come up, I can hear the buzz from the fuel pump, but when turning the ignition on, it sound like the engine is stuck and it can't rotate. The engine starts after 1-2 seconds, revs go up to 1.500, the engine has violent vibrations and heavy white smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe. After less than a minute revs go down to 900 as it should, vibrations stop and no smoke. The car works perfectly fine.
The thing is that, this happens only after the car starts when cold and parked for more than 7-8 hours. After the problem cures itself, if I switch it off and leave it for let's say 10 mins, it starts perfectly fine.
Any ideas?

Ps: in my video don't mind the missing air filter housing. It broke a while ago and still can't find a used one to replace it

I suspect this is a mechanical problem not related to battery or starter side, although if it continues it will/can damage both.
What I suspect is you have an internally leak inside the combustion chamber causing a form of hydraulic lock on initial cranking over of engine.
Are you losing any coolant?
If you smell the exhaust smoke does it smell of fuel or coolant?
If it is coolant it may smell slightly sweet like antifreeze.

I am not sure if I can smell collant at the exhaust. I will check it again today. Haven't seen any coolant leak the last 2 days. My theory is that, when I leave it overnight after a long ride, an amount of coolant gets in the combuation chamber because of the pressure built up in the cooland circuit and that causes a hydraulic lock in a cylinder. But then I guess I would had an error about misfire. Alfaobd and multiecuscan don't show any faults. What puzzles me most is that it has to stay off for quite a few hours for showing these symptoms.

That was my thought , a slow coolant leak via the head gasket?
