I have resolved the problem .Phew !!!. Faults cleared and car starting and running normally .

With assistance this afternoon I attempted to start the engine by jumping the contacts on start relay T20 whilst the key was turned to start . The engine cranked over OK but did not fire . So I can only assume that the ECM does not switch on the signal for coil packs and/or injectors as the clutch pedal fault is blocking engine start . I got an additional fault code from the starter motor to the effect " unexpected running. " So the ECM recognised the engine cranking with out the starter relay energised. I think the same result would have happened if I had tried push/bump start which is probably a procedure that needs consigning to the past nowadays for cars with ECUs

So after this didn't work I tried the clutch pedal learning execute again (with the engine stopped and fault still present ) This time after "complete" I went back to the faults and it had already disappeared. I then tried to start and it started OK , I left it running for 10 mins as I knew the battery was getting low. I then stopped it and did the Neutral signal learning and that cleared too, but this time I ignored the 2 second instruction and just followed the live message pop ups on MES . I don't know whether turning the engine over made any difference or it is just a case of going through the procedure more than once with the engine stopped . I did the procedure with the engine running when the fault occurred . So may be that is wrong and it should be with the engine stopped

The clutch position still runs from 1.5% when fully released to 100% when pushed hard down . I'll leave investigating the Start-Stop issue further for another day

So in conclusion. The instructions in MES for executing some of these functions may not be entirely accurate or are so time critical that it may take a few attempts to get them to work. Probably on earlier 500 models it would not have been a serious issue as the P080A fault would not block starting .

Thanks for the suggestions you guys sent me
