Technical Smoke from exhaust

Hi all,

Im having an issue with my panda whereas when the engine is warm and left to idle, if you press the accelerator pedal white smoke is coming out of the exhaust. It smells like burnt oil and i think it is. I put 20w50 oil and a thickener so it doesnt get through the stem seals but im still getting smoke. The engine doesnt smoke while driving or idling just when you depress the accelerator after the engine is idle and warm. Thanks alot

20w50 i think its wrong grade.
Had same issue with my 92 uno, first i thought that idling wasnt smoking but at the end my head gasket between cylinders 2&3 gone and i found engine oil in antifreeze.

Head gasket is new and oil is clean and so is the water

Could be the cylinder head are you loosing water ! That could be a clue it's not a big job
1 or so £25 leave it idling see if after 30mins if there still
Steam or loss of water or small puddle at exhaust exit reving of engine should push water from exhaust. Another clue!!

Water level is not going low. Its kept at a good level and not moving

Are you losing any fluids? Oil or water?
How much smoke are you getting?

If engine oil was being burnt I would have thought that the smoke from the exhaust would be bluish, not white.

How about your oil level .. has that dropped at all? You tend to notice smoke at idle as opposed to travelling at speed, simply because at speed the rushing air dissipates the smoke before you see it in your rear view mirror.

As somebody has mentioned, you will get steam and water dribbling from your exhaust at start up. For every gallon of petrol you burn the engine produces another gallon of water from the atmosphere - which is thrown out of the exhaust. When the engine/exhaust is cold at start up this is very noticeable - hence the collected water in the exhaust being thrown out. When the engine reaches normal temperature - and the exhaust is hot - the white smoke ('steam') should disappear.

You say that your car is not losing water - but there's also a smell. A strange burning smell would also point towards head/gasket problems.

You've had the head gasket replaced? I'm presuming there was a fault/diagnosis which led to the head being removed? It's possible that the original fault is still there .. maybe something like a warped or cracked head. Was the head checked/skimmed before being refitted?

If you suspect that the head gasket may be involved, try some liquid sealer. It won't cure a cracked head but it may compensate for slight warping/burning head gasket. The 'steel seal' has a god reputation:

White smoke oily smell it'll be the piston rings or as you suggested the stem seals. If you can, drive down the road (preferably down a hill) with the throttle released, for a short distance, then as the revs are dropping give it a foot full and look in the mirror for a cloud of white smoke. If you get a cloud it'd be my bet that it's the rings.

Make sure you top up your water as well
