Hi,
I have a Punto Mk 2, JTD ELX with failed power steering. It was coming and going for a few weeks before stopping completely, and the first thing I was going to check was the fuse. There doesn't seem to be one marked for it though, either in the main internal box or the one under the bonnet.
Any suggestions?
Many Thanks,
Louier

Have looked in the manual book that came with the car there should be a page with all the fuses on that will tell you where the fuse will be :)

Have a look at all the fuses one by one and see if you have any broken ones or google it :)

Useful!

If you look on the back of the covers, both internal and external boxes you will see a diagram to explain which fuse is which.

Im not 100% sure if the Mk2 has a fuse, think it might be on the Mk2b.

F5 maxi and f35 on that manual

if the powersteering was on the blink and then failed
Chance of it been the fuse are super slim to be honest.....
However chance MIGHT be on your side

A weak battery is a Main cause - if its over 7 years old for a decent of 3 to 5 for a cheap chinese battery, replace
Also remove - clean/abrade - copper grease the battery terminal clamps - the earth posts as well

Punto Mk3 Power Steering - Failure. year 2003

I have fiat punto MK3 2003 . It has been tight the steering, meaning that there is no power inside the steering. What should it be ? My friend told me tat it was a loss of oil form the steering. From time to time the steering comes and go. To fix my problem , i always turn off the key car , then start the car. I read that it could it be that i rarely use the CITY button key . WHAT DO YOU THINK ????

Hi Ziggy

We are a power steering specialist and have extensive knowledge of the electric power steering issues on the Punto's.
There are 2 fuses that control your power steering, the main one is a a 60amp maxi fuse tthat lives in the fuse box under the bonnet just behind the battey , the position is F05.
It is very very rare for the Fuse to be your problem, of the hundreds of Punto power steering failures we have sorted out I can only remember 1 that was a fuse and even then the reason the fuse blew was because of a short within the power steering ECU.
Unfortunately your power steering has most likely stopped because of a fault with either the motor or the torque position sensor.
The only way to tell 100% is to have the fault codes read with a scanner, we offer this as a free service but may be too far away for you to come to us in Bristol, if you want to give me a ring on 0117-9602906, I am happy to try and help you.
Even if you need a new column I can supply a reconditioned unit at a very reasonable price and all of my units are guaranteed for two years.
Hope this helps

Re: Punto Mk3 Power Steering - Failure. year 2003

Hi Vultus

On your 2003 punto you should have the later style motor fitted ( rev03A) these motors hardly ever fail, but the torque position sensor is prone to failure.
Ideally you need to have your car plugged into a scanner to read the fault codes, I offer this for free but most garages would charge for this.
If you need any help getting your steering sorted out then by all means give me a buzz and I will be happy to help.

Re: Punto Mk3 Power Steering - Failure. year 2003

First stop make sure the battery is 100% If its doubtful fit a new one with good capacity. Winter is coming so its a good investment whatever happens with the steering.

If that is no help you will need a reconditioned steering column. A new one from Fiat or a discount parts suppliers is the most costly option and you don't get a proper warranty.

PSG - Yes your Right Pre 2003 are more prone to motor failure
When the go - they go big (the sensors)

But Winter is coming, its already getting cold and wet
Batteries been weak can often set the power-steering off
(somehow mine is happy with a battery that goes flat after 10mins)
But i've had all the warning signs

Only 1ce has mine detected a Fault that was reable - P0500 - Speed sensor
again its a wiring Mod fix - i just cleared the code and its been fine ever since

Condensation is a bugger too, My motor was shorting out due to moisture
A heat up and left to dry = Fine ever since :)
