Hi all,

Got a few questions regarding these codes. I got an EML yesterday, MultiECU is showing P0486-13 (EGR Valve) as open circuit/present and P0487-74 (EGR valve position) as present.

The actual EGR valve position at the time of running MultiECU was 0.006mm.

Previously, I had a couple of EML for the P0486-13 but only intermittent, as the advice is now ‘present’ and not clearable I presume something needs to be done. So if anyone could give some advice on the following I’d be grateful.

1. Would a blast up the motorway help clear this problem or does the ‘present’ message mean that the valve is stuck and I now have to clean or replace the EGR? Also, is there a risk in running the vehicle like this? (currently have no running/idle/low power issues).

2. I have previously read that there are no options for blanking off the EGR on the later 2.3 130 multi-jet 2 engines, does anyone know if this is still the case?

3. Worst case scenario, the EGR needs cleaning or replacing, has anyone on here done one on a later MJ2 engine and can they give advice on the job? I would love any tips on the removal etc if someone has done it.

TIA

Ok, scrap the above for now. Should have paid more attention to the message from MultiECU, as I presume that 'open circuit' means there's a break in the wiring loom or connector at some point? but with so many posts around about failing EGR valves I just focused on that, even then it would more likely be the throttle body or valve solenoid - red mist moment at the thought of another big bill!

Oh well, gives me something to do this weekend.

I would look at the loom at the ECU end,
2 x big connections to the ECU, one of them (poss both going from memory) is cable tied to the ECU bracket, over time this loom wears against the metal, eventually causing either a pin prick hole or wears the outer cable protection away, causing water to ingress and corrode the wire, and or short out,

I had similar where it started occasionally throwing EML then limp mode, after a few weeks I couldn’t clear codes, as the corrosion got worse

Paid for a miss diagnosed turbo, when in fact it was this loom,

I posted a thread “money saving tip” I think it was called

Hi,

I know this post is 6 years ago 😂 but wondering. If you ever managed to get to the bottom of this ? I’m having this exact issue now same codes. 2016 2.3 multijet non ad blue
