Hi took my Ducato to a local garage as my front exhaust was blowing (fixed now as clamp was loose) and I had an oil leak. Garage say my crank seal has gone and they will call me on Monday with prices as they are busy at the moment. Was just wondered what sort of money it costs from a typical garage, to replace so I don’t get ripped off.

Matt
My advice would be to check yourself if visible oil leak in that area, don't commit yourself and maybe get a second quote, if worried.

There’s definitely an oil leak as losing about 4 litres every 6/7 weeks. Will try have a look underneath tomorrow. Any idea on what a price is normal for that?

Not off hand , I have done many over the years , but not on your 2.3 engine, I am guessing it is a timing chain? so hopefully if pulley end of crank, just remove alternator belt, crank pulley, prise out old seal carefully and replace with new one. In which case I would say around an hours labour, but don't quote me.
4 litres in 6/7 weeks sounds a hell of a lot to me, if it's all leaking and not burning through a worn engine we could follow your journey by looking at crashed motorbikes! ;)
Correction on labour, if my 2012 cam belt book relates to your engine Series, then over 4 hours as behind cambelt which would mean a new cambelt kit as well so much more expensive job! Although the 3 hours plus is only for the earlier models as book indicates.

Wasn’t crank seal. Was sump gasket. With driving it had splattered some of the oil around the gearbox. Took it to another garage which said they are known for ripping people off.

My god, if it was leaking that amount through the sump gasket at least you won’t have any corrosion worries underneath for a while, must have been like the old oil slick button in the 80’s car chase films 🤣. Seriously though sounds like it’s not safe to be using in its current state. Hopefully garage number 2 will sort it for you!
