General over to the bravo side

Yeah that spoiler is a standard Bravo spoiler with the bolts cut off. Normaly the spoiler is bolted on with four bolts throught the glass but that car has standard glass so no holes. To buy the glass its £300+ so I was going to tiger seal that spoiler on. You will need to make 2mm spacers between the glass and four mounting points.

That or i was hoping to find a HGT with the same colour boot wings and front bumper.

to fit valve bed seals you need to remove all old ones obovously

put the valves in the head and in the head gasket set from fiat there will be valve bed seals and a little plastic cap about an inch long

you place this cap over the top of the valve stem in place in the head and slide the new stem seal over it and down the stem to the head and press it into place securing it this means the seal isnt damaged from sliding past the 3 rings for the collets

after you have done this you cannot slide the valve in or out the head you need to set it in place with it's spring collets and so on

so you have to bed each valve in with paste set them in order on the bench and fit them fit the seal with the tool then secure them one by one

it's fidly work so you can see why a complacent machinist would just put the seals in and then slide the valves in afterwards just lazy

Just a quick one, again ! haha

good news is i have a head gasket set and head bolts, bad news is i didnt get a plastic sleeve for my valves to fit the new seals. im going to have a look in my garage tomorrow as i may have one lying around from an old cinq gasket set.

Im going to try and remove the valves tomorrow, is the a suspific tool i need to remove the valves of can i just use a standard spring compressor ?

cheers

I didnt get the plastic sleeve in that set either.

I used this one.

Right just a quick update, i have got my head back . . .

Had all 12 valve seals done, and also had the head skimmed as my mate who did it for me said there was no signs of it being done previously.

so hopefully tomorrow i can make a start on rebuilding as i have all the gaskets and bolts

a question has just arose in my mind, how do you time a 1.4 12v ? what position does the cylinders need to be in ?

if anyone has any timing tools i could borrow would be very helpful

cheers

Timing the engine is really easy once you have the tool infront of you.
Unfortunatly I sold my timing tool on eBay.

For the block.
The tool fits into two bolt holes on the oil pump and then into a key on the crank sprocket. When everything lines up cylinder 1 is at top dead centre.

For the head.
While it is on the work bench. Loosen the camshaft sprocket nut so the sprocket can move in its key way. I would put the camshaft caps on with the bolts just nipped up and with the oil spray bar off. Then put the camshaft locking tool on. I couldnt get the tool on and off with the spraybar fitted.

Fit the head then cambelt. The belt will only go on one way with the white marks lining up, you can not get it wrong. Then set the tensioner to maximum tension and jiggle the cam sprocket so it settles in the correct position. Nip the cam sprocket up by hand remove the locking tool then tighten the sprocket to the correct torque with a reaction bar and torque wrench. The camshaft locking tool is for positioning only if you put any force on it the bolts will brake the head.

With the tensioner still at maximum Carefully turn the engine over a couple of times by hand. You can recheck the timing again if you wish mine was still spot on.

Put the tensioner in its final position. Fit the sprayer bar and tighten all the camshaft cap bolts to the correct torque. Done.

Cheers Adrian =]

unfortunately, i did all this before i got your post

if near enough finished rebuilding just some bits i have to buy tomorrow before finishing the rest off.

going to buy:

- new sparkplugs
- new oil
- new oil filter
- new coolant
- new sump plug washer

think thats about it

then i just have the fun of timing

Right i need some real help now = [

as you can see i have already built up the engine so timing is going to be an arse

i have timing marks for TDC on the block, i just dont no what position i need the crank shaft sprokit in.

is there a way of doing the timing without dismantiling again ? and without paying stupid money for the timing tools ?

right . . .

when the 2 marks arrowed hear line up cylinder 1 is at TDC
im confused with the cam sprokit though

i have 2 white marks on it and i dont no what position it needs to be in ?

ANY ONE NO ???

Yep what you have highlighed on the auxilary sprocket is the TDC alighnment.

I put that white line on the camshaft sprocket nut, Incase I had a problem I could check the timing hadnt moved.

The other white line near the camshaft sprocket teeth is the timing mark that should line up with an arrow on the plastic cambelt guard, I think its at 3'oclock from memory (obvious once spotted), it also lines up with one of the two white stripes on the cambelt when you first install it.

Problem is if you have just fitted the head randomly I dont see how your going to get the valves in the right position now that the head is already on. Id guess there is a chance the valves where bent when tightening the head down. I would not turn the camshaft if its in the wrong position.

Unless someone with more experince has a better idea. I would either take the head off again. or remove the chamshaft by taking all the caps off so all the valves close. Then try to refit it at the right angle so it opens the right valves.

right dont worry about bent valves as i tightened the head bolts when the pistons were in the middle of the cylinders, and also when i put the head on the cam shaft wasnt fitted.

i will take your approach adrian and remove the cam shaft then line TDC up then refit the camshaft in the correct position.

All sorted now idle is fine no smoke. 1 very happy Bloke !

just the minor mot fail bits then i shall book it for an MOT ! fingers crossed

it lives !!!! just idleing a little higher revs then it should be.
Good stuff. :) That might have been the ECU relearn. It seems to settle after the first turn off and restart. It threw me a few times untill I realised ;)

If it runs fine it will be a great car I really enjoyed it when it worked.
Can wait to hear how the MOT goes, fingers crossed.

Hey started it this morning, all spot on! not lost no oil or water, fan kicking in when temp is half way, took it around the block, brilliant drive. only thing is when you put you foot right down sometimes it hesitates only for a split second, then its goes like a bat out of hell.

Well over all im really pleased on how it has gone, and no more blue smoke.

while im not busy tomorrow i may change the back bumper and put a side strip on the passenger door. also may look at replacing the nackered wing. as i have a spare on my brava that i could put on. also i have my brava polly lights that i could fit.

Just bought a cheap set of HGT alloys =]

there not in the best of condision but they will get it trough an MOT will post pics tomorrow

just a few pics

still has a very slight hesitation on acceleration, could the timing be very slightly out ?
