Hi,
Just serviced my punto myself today, second time since i bought the car, done simple service oil change, oil filter change, spark plug change, cleaned throttle body, clean induction filter.

When removing the oil sump drain plug bolt i realised that the bolt was rounded and the 13mm spanner wud no longer turn the bolt. 12mm wudnt fit the bolt. I tryed and tryed for ages to get a socket or spanner to fit neither would even after trying to hammer a 12mm onto the rounded head.

I then tryed to file the bolt head so it would fit a 12mm spanner i managed to do it on one side to fit but as soon as i turned the bolt the spanner slipped off:(

In the end i had to get a chizzel and a hammer and i smashed a gash onto the bolt head and washer at such an angel that it was turning slightly with each hit.

Took ages to get off and its all smashed up now couple of slitts in washer and completly round bolt head with 1 straight edge lol i thort id have to take it to garage and have sump removed or summat lol

Anyway my question is am i meant to replace the oil sump drain plug bolt evertime i service the car??? i was once told to do so but thort its only a bolt wot can go wrong well iv found out lol

And where can i get one of these sump plug bolts from how much are they???

Please help iv needed car tomoro so i used mole grips to put the same bolt back into the sump as everything is closed at this time on a sunday. Defo needs replacing asap

you shouldnt have no bolt then. you should have a tapered plug that undoes with a 12mm male hex,

an no washer

Nope its a bolt head on a thread that fits the hole and connected to the bolt head is a washer the washer dose not move its more like a lip on the bolt head all attached together.

And i seen a w reg punto i serviced before same engine and that had a bolt with same attached washer lip thing on it.

Its a 13mm bolt head, i know what you mean tho about a male hex i think my gear box oil plug is that not the oil sump plug tho

8v engines as said previously had a 12mm hex key requirement to undo them.

you must have a 16v engine... only the 16v engines had a sump plug which required a spanner... as far as I know.

W reg would of been a MK2? so its more likely you have a 16v engine in it.. 8v I think was used more in the MK1 and gradually phased out in the mk2

Mate i defo 100% have a 8v not a 16v engine and yes w reg was a mk2



Take a look for yourself il get a pic of the sump plug tmoz if you want

anyone know if ishould replace the oil sump plug bolt everytime i service the punto????

Anyone with a 1.2l 8v engine got a bolt with washer/lip attached to it for a sump plug?????
 
If you've knackered the shoulders you'll probably need a pipe wrench. A pipe wrench will grip owt.

I'd be looking for a replacement plug though, you can pick them up for a few quid. Or free from a scrappy.

I got it out with a chizel and hammer and i temperorily put it back in to hold my oil until tomoro with molegrips i can remove it with chizel again or molegrips, i defo need a new one, any ideas how much???
 
Could of put it in for any reason, it's just a plug, and 12mm alan key is a bit of an odd-ball size, know I didn't have one in any of my sets.

TBH im better off with a bolt as i can just use a spanner or socket if its not rounded, if its allen key bit male hex or wat ever then il have to buy a torque set and long breaker bar cos im pretty sure i dnt have enuf strength to open it with an allen key.
 
Mate it should be a hex socket, had a look and I think its diesels and maybe HGTs that can have a bolt with washer. We have a 98 Mk1 1.2 8v and a 2005 1.2 8V and both have sump plugs whith a female hex socket. Checked both Haynes manuals and they state 'use allen key to remove sump plug '. The one I have is a double ended gizmo (12mm one end and10mm the other I think) that fits in a 19mm spanner or socket.

You are probaly in this muddle because the bolt is not tappered and will wedge and bind in the threads of the sump. Also do you have a torque wrench ? Because the book suggests to tighten to 20Nm (15lbf ft in old money) which is not very tight if you lent on the spanner a bit hard last time that will be why its been a bugger this time.

I think the advice is get the correct part and tighten to the correct torque.

I have a haynes manual never thort to check it mate but will do tmoz its in the garage now at another house lol

No i aint got a torque wrench but will be a good investment
 
just rob 1 from scrappy if possible (my local 1 drains all fluids and then keeps the sump bolts and fuel caps seperate) so jut ask em if they have em removed. shouldnt need to replace each time just give it a wipe each time (cant remember if its magnetic or not) but just do it just in case.
