Lately whilst in traffic, the oil pressure has been dropping to a third of what it should be, but full pressure restored when driving. But the last two weeks ive had a knocking noise, that sounds similair to a big end bearing failure, but the car performs, starts and drives perfectly, so it cant be a big end bearing. Today i done an oil change to rule out the possibility of **** oil. On restart i have the same noise and poor pressure on tickover. I drove two miles down the road, and the noise is getting louder and starting to grind and squeal. Im thinking my cams have gone now, but performance and driveablity are still normal. got back outside the house, took foot of accelarator, then i get "low oil pressure" warning! I think the oil pump has gone - any ideas of possible other problems, or does anyone know how much an oil pump replacement is going to cost

I really wouldn't drive it in it's current state.. It's major. The fact it's producing sufficient pressure at higher revs would tend to rule out the oil pump. The pump can't keep up with it at low revs so you have a pressure release (or blockage), oil escaping, a too big a clearance somewhere a bit like someone with a gaping wound but their heart (the pump) is ok. Got to find the wound and stop the bleeding

Shame to say it sounds like major surgery (n)

Hope you have warranty or BUPA

2.4 crank shaft gone!!

You would believe right. I always thought it was the crank, and had my worst fears confirmed. After a chat to a very helpful mechanic at eric ashmole fiat in swansea, we came to the conclusion that something is up with the crank, or most likely big end bearings are knackered. still need ideas or suggestions how to repair? is it an engine out job, or is it a new engine job. If so, has anybody got a spare one???? While the engine is stripped is there anything i can do to upgrade the power, new cams, or lightened flywheel etc? ive heard of one piece piston rings setup on some ford engines are these available for the 2.4 abarth?

Any ideas much appreciated, im desperate:worship: . Theres 58 hours overtime just dissapeared from this months wage

It'll be an engine out job. Only a strip down will reveal what needs to be done
Someone reported a problem with the crankshaft end float (sideways movement) which produced low oil pressure.

Best mod to the 2.4 is a remap but extra stresses produce more failures, some of the modding boys will be along later

beggining to sound veryt expensive

Which ever way you go its going to be expensive so have you considered a second hand engine from a breakers ? but if you dont want to go that way I think a short engine would be your best option this is a engine block with reground crank new bearings and pistons sometimes the block will have been re-bored to take new pistons and if so this will give you a slight performance boost if you want to improve the performance even more then the cams would be next but be warned they can be expensive as a new item where as re-profiled cams could cost you less if you wish to go there I can give you more details of where to try at a later date. Sorry to see this happening to you Tony hope you resolve the situation soon I would hate to lose a fellow Welshy and stilo owner from Fiat forum (y)

I'd get it looked at first (and soonest) as there's just a chance it could be something simple and it doesn't sound like too much damage has been done. As Deckchair says you've got an internal oil leak and there's just a chance something has come unbolted.

Otherwise, as PNL says an engine from a crashed Abarth might your cheapest solution.

I had an early VW once (rare at the time just like the Stilo) with a serious engine issue. I contacted a main dealer (one I trusted) and got a price for an engine swap. Dropped the VW off at the dealers. Borrowed my mates car & trailer, took a trip to a London breakers and picked up a VW engine from a rolled write-off. Delivered the engine to the main dealers and they fitted it. I kept the car for years afterwards and never had a bit of trouble.

Ok! ive had it checked, and diagnosis is that the crank is knackered, although i am going to get a second opinion.

Fiat qoiuted to collect, supply, and fit a new engine £3000, reasonable i thought for fiat, but still not paying that.

Quoted £1800 for a reground and rebuild by a company in cardiff.

Anybody know it?

maybe i'l hold back on the cams for now....
wages gone down the pan :bang:

Anthony is this the company thats down by Cardiff city footy club in Sloper Rd if so then :shakehead and dont go to the one in Ely either as they are (n) also

ok everyone, let me know as soon as one of you crash an abarth, so i can buy your engine, sooner rather than later please:D

seriously, any suggestions of a reputable company that can do a decent job?

have you checked in the local breakers or on the net with any one who can sell you the engine out of a crashed car , must be the easiest option , especially if you can hear it running first. Same thing happened to a mates cosworth engine, had silly quotes to rebuild his existing engine, eventually found a 50,000 miler out of a write off for £600 and got it fitted for £200

Hi Anthony.. Sorry I completely forgot to get back to you about this..

I haven't spoken to Pete about the engine but if you were interested I can do a recon exchange engine (fiat o.e.) for you for cost price £1646.02 inc vat.

Retail on complete Engine is £2110.29inc vat.

Dont know if this helps you in any way.

Shame you're not closer to us I could've got a deal on the labour for you too...

no prbs nick, the recon sounds good. I'll weigh up what options i got. Cheers for the links to pete. I had to catch a bloody bus today, never again. I dont mind changing the engine myself, done it before on other cars with no probs.

Anyway, theres plenty of tech help on this forum, cheers guys (y)

i have just the same fault on my 02 plate abarth!!
the car went in to the garage two weeks ago and garage people say it should be ready this tuesday, the latest quote i got last friday for around 1200 pounds and i'm getting new crankshaft fitted, so maybe you should hold on for couple of days and i'll let you know how it will end.

As with yours on mine it started with knocking sound between 2200 - 3000rpm, then it was going lower (from 1700rpm) and louder, then i've noticed oil pressure dropping to around 1/3 of the scale but comming back to full when driving, and about 3 weeks ago engine become very noisy along with oil pressure droping while driving. Everything started couple months ago, and i thought that it was the timing variator beeing noisy (and i was wrong :( ). I was looking for used engine from breakers but haven't found any)

out of interest, will the 2.0 turbo coupe engine go in? im thinking these may be easier to find, and ive always fancied a turbo. Or is the wiring too different etc...

I think the wiring would not be compatible for the coupe engine also exhaust system and other components would not be compatible why not ask down in the coupe section Tony there's sure to be someone down there who could give you some positive info about this conversion :)
