Hi, I wonder if anyone has seen this before.

The wifes 2002 1.2 has got lots of oil on the alternator:confused:

Looking around with a torch and there is no obvious leak. The only thing I can think of is that I replaced the sump last year (due to corrosion) but the alternator is way above the line of the sump, plus there are no signs underneath of a leak from the sump (although I haven't had it up in the air yet.

Has anyone seen this, or have an idea what might be the problem?

TIA

I'd guess at a rocker cover oil leak dripping on to the alternator drive belt and contaminating the alternator, or a leak from the front crankshaft seal.

Would explain why you dont see any leaked oil... and its VERY common!

Is there any oil anywhere else in the engine? Because my gasket has got a leak and oil gets flicked everywhere by the belts. Only happens when the engine is warm you might wanna get it looked at. Well thats what is wrong with mine just needs re-sealing nothing major but worth a check

Thanks for the replies.

Looks like the front crankshaft seal is the offender then!

What sort of a job is it to replace it? I presume the timing belt will need to be removed

Yeah double check, but the crankshaft seal is remove engine mount, timing belt, then the crankshaft sprocket! Which I failed in being able to do and then it's just behind that! If it isn't that it'll be the oil pump seal which you need to do as above plus, drop the exhaust, remove sump.

Hi,

Sorry if I am resurrecting an old post.
I have a Mk2 Punto with the same issue detailed above. (only not as much oil on the belt
The car is booked in with my local garage tomorrow.
Does anyone know how much it is likely to cost?
Thanks,
James

if yours looks same as in picture then i had this exact fault in last week
customer had had new sump fitted but whoever fitted it had failed to use enough sealant
the oil was coming out the gasket by the pulley and being thrown up onto the alternator

My car was in the garage today.
They said the breather pipe was blocked causing the oil to blow out past the crankshaft oil seal. they unblocked the pipe and said to keep an eye on it and bring it back if it gets worse. they didn't charge anything for it as well
