hi all . sent my wife to pick up some oil & filter for my 3L- 2008 she came back with 5w-40 fully synthetic ford wss-m2c-917-a.mb229.1 the guy in the shop said its the right one will it do or change it the filter is a mann w 9009 cheers

IIRC, the guy who does our 2008 3.0 Kontiki uses 10w-40 semi synthetic. We only do 2-3k miles a year in the UK, so not arduous conditions. Will have a look to see what the handbook says later.

From the 2008 Ducato handbook:

"Synthetic based oils, SAE 5W-40, Fiat 9.55535, N2 qualification - Selinia WR. Should non-genuine SAE 5W-40 products be used, lubricants with minimum ACEA B4 properties are tolerated but in this event, top engine performance is not guaranteed. Using low quality products, not compliant with ACEA B4 properties and specifications could cause engine damages not covered by warranty".

So I read this as 5W-40, full or part synthetic but I think 5W-40 only comes in "full" synthetic spec. IMO, this would have done the job http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/p/c...gineoils/5w40-engine-oil/?521776031&0&cc5_248

Edit - have checked what our guy put in last year and it was indeed 5W-40, sorry for the confusion.

hi thanks for the info its the same oil as eurocarparts only halfords many thanks

Fiat recommend their own brand of oil Selina, like Peugeot Citroen recommend Total. Fiat could no more recommend Shell oil than they could recommend Mercedes vans. The best we will get is a grudging admission that another brand will do if their own brand is unavailable, which is what we have got. ACEA B4 is alright for a 2008 model (the latest ones have a DPF which requires a low SAPS oil). As for viscosity it depends on outside temperature. The wider viscosity range tends to be recommended because it has a wider temperature range for more countries. But the Citroen handbook gives a graph showing anywhere between and including 0w 30 to 15w 40 is alright for the British mainland climate. Being surrounded by water warmed by the Gulf Stream protects us from extremes of temperature found in other countries.
I will try to attach a scan of the graph from my Citroen Relay (X2/50) handbook

I use TOTAL 9000 5W40 and buy 20 litres at a time
£81.99 delivered. Both our cars also use the same

My personal view is, my van is my biggest investment, it's what earns me £, prob half the cost of some motor homes
But as some folk on here have had the Selenia (fiat recommended) tested at I think JCB or CAT the results claimed how good the oil is, in longevity etc

That's what goes in mine,

Heard lots of stories of these engines not liking semi synth, the heavy a grade. Also throwing rods and burning oil after years of cheap oil

3.0 euro 5 180bhp 2012 year. Currently running sweet on 273000 miles

Just my personal view
