General Oil consumption and petrol smell on the dipstick

Currently reading:
General Oil consumption and petrol smell on the dipstick

Start at the beginning

Put one drop of oil from the dipstick on to some clean card (not the glossy side if you use some food packaging)

Wait a few seconds and take a photo and post it

Let's see what this oil looks like

Only takes a second

And then we will know what we are dealing with

. After 6500 miles I had to ad 2l of oil

They vary quite a bit in oil consumption from car to car, some people never top up between oil changes

But fiat usually quote 1 liter per 1000 miles as acceptable limit on most of their none turbo engines

3250 per liter is well within expectable

It should say in your owners manual, here's my car

So I just came from work and done some check no error code on the diagnostic tool..I will put some photos of the diagnostic tool and the oil on the card..I have done a video of the smoke usually I haven't seen this smoke maybe because today it's cold and foggy?

Does your scanner do a list of Error codes showing rather than the live data?
By the way was the exhaust vapour with engine fully warmed up or from cold as if from cold and you are not actuallyl losing water/coolant, then condensation from the exhaust is not unusual.
I would be more concerned if that was with a warm engine.

I will check the scanner...the engine was warm what could it be?

If you are not losing coolant and it is still doing it after a run and temperature gauge in the middle 90Degrees Centigrade then I don't know, unless it is some reaction to the petrol vapours in the oil?

Are you sure there's fuel dilution of the oil

I would expect a second ring on the cardboard, as fuel is absorbed much quicker

In fact the oil in pretty good condition from the looks of it

Maybe..however the photos from the scanner are not live..because the ignition os on but the car was not started..one thing that I noted is the Spark advance in the photo attached...as you can see it's -47 when it should be positive..after some research I find that negative Spark advance means """Negative timing refers to the spark plugs firing afterthe piston reaches top dead center (TDC) on the compression stroke, instead of before. This can lead to several problems, including reduced power, increased fuel consumption, and engine damage."""
Possible cause of negative Spark advance:

Incorrect timing belt or chain installation
Faulty sensor readings
Vacuum leak

1 month ago I have done the replacement of the timing belt on a garage in Manchester...and the problems have started after this..I don't wana think that maybe the installation of the timing belt was incorrect

Probably a bit late to lean on them.
How did the vehicle feel after you drove away from cam belt job?

I have done another check on the oil..when I smell it on the dipstick it feels like a bit of petrol smell..when I put it on my finger and smell it I don't smell petrol

Engine not running, most of the live data is meaningless

Except the MAP sensor is reading the atmospheric pressure correctly

The car drives well...starts ok cold and warm...the only thing I have noticed is that when the car is warm and when I'm standing with the car started it starts trembling time to time, like losing power but the RPM its ok not moving

If timing belt job done wrong I would expect it would be obvious, both with the way it ran and error codes etc.

This also applies to the Grande Punto.

If the OP has done 6,000 miles and used 400ml per 1000 miles thats 2.4 litres. More or less what he says he has put in.

It appears the new timing chain has caused the oil burn to reach maximum? And may settle down right about now? Or was the timing chain not done right?

I have just checked my owner manual and it states max 400 ml for 1000 km..so probably the consumption of oil is normal because I have done 10000 km and topped up 2l so basically 200 ml per 1000 km consumed.
However tomorrow I will replace the oil and filter..just bought the oil that fiat indicates Selenia 50W-40 and before I will flush the engine and after put the new oil in..I will monitor it 😀

The thread starts with an oil dilution problem

Which if was the case, driving the car could possibly damage the engine

From what I see on the cardboard test there does not appear to be any fuel in the oil

We need to be sure before going on

I believe petrol fumes smells were nearby and not in fact in the oil it's self

If this is the case, we can move on to the next problem

The oil looks pretty good, I wouldn't at this stage consider doing an engine flush, it possible to cause some minor issues, but unlikely to fix any.

By all means change the oil and filter
