New car?

New car?

If you can stretch to a mark 2 the variable valve timing 1.6 is the one to have 115 brake which is adequate to slightly quick (same area as 1.8), while returning the same if not better mpg than a normal 1.6. I personally as said by other people would not take the 99bhp 1.6...so either a 1.8 if you are getting a mk1 or 1.6 Tivct in a mk2.

Whats the difference between a Mk1 and Mk2? Is it just the newer model?

All have pretty much the same floor pan and chassis with slight tweaks.

i must admit, i'm really starting to be a ford man myself.

if you don't need the space of a focus, i'd go for a panda, i really like my mams too.

I really dont like the look of the Panda really, and I'm not that keen on getting another Fiat...had so many things go wrong with this one.

I think the thing with the Panda is, some of them have a hint of van about them.

I would consider one if the looks were right, as the value seems to be excellent.

as for things going wrong on fiats, in my experience i have had more things, and serious things go wrong on other cars.

The difference between my fiats and cars that cocked up- 8yrs.

im of the thinking that regardless of make, you can buy any 5yr old + car and have a raft of problems.

Look at it this way, you could have got a focus the same age of your punto and had a raft of problems and you would think fords were cack

I know someone with a 1999 golf who swears its more reliable than my fiat, but in the last 6 months nothing has broke on mine, and his has been in the garage 4 times.

the difference? 9 yrs.

I know it can happen with any car, my Punto is 8 years old, I've had it since September 2007 and had the following go wrong:

Head Gastric <sp?> twice (£250 each time)
Catalytic Converter (£300)
Wiper arm snapped twice (£150 each time)
Clutch (£270)

£1370 on getting it repaired, only paid £1700 for it, and after all doesn't Fiat have the reputation of breaking a lot? Fiat It Again Tomorrow or something?

I understand that this is a Fiat Forum, so people are going to be biased towards Fiats, but in my experience with them, its not been very good.

If you want a reliable car, Honda is your best bet.

These cars are reliable as hell, they arent joking.

We bought a W'reg Honda accord with 86,000 miles and has been absolutely flawless. The engine sounds brand new, the aircon has hardly been used in 8 months and its still bloody freezing. Build quality is impeccable and its one of the best handling, fun to drive cars I've had.

The front left shock is bone dry and sqeaks like a bitch over bumps (doubt any of the shocks have been replaced) but the ride quality is still MUCH better than my 56 plate GP (which is now sold)

But For an average car, you probably cant go wrong with a focus. But they do have a slightly cheap feel

Honda do cost more to buy though, dont they?

But I suppose you'd save that in repairs:D

Fiat- fix it again tomorrow/fix it again tony

Ford- fix or repair daily/ found on roadside dead

lotus- lots of trouble usually serious

the list could go on.

looking at the price of your HG repair, its rather cheap- could that be why it went again? I paid £800 for this on my old Seat Ibiza.

that same said Ibiza cost me £2300 to buy. it was 5 years old. in the three years i had it it cost me £2100 or so in repairs- this is not counting the consumables and vandalism.

my old man drove rovers for years, continually being told by workmates they were crap, rot and break and head gaskets go. This was never the case with the cars he had from rover.

I understand that things can go wrong with any car, but with the experience I've had with my Punto (and my sisters), its time to move on. Would still recommend Fiats though, was a great first car.

Just had a look on whatcar.com after seeing a advert on TV, and the review looks promising. Decided to go for a 1.8 TDCi Model. Just got to start saving up now lol.

Thanks for all the help everyone.

good luck! rare as hens teeth low mileage, in your price range they will probably have been to moon and back

Now I've set my eyes on one, I'll wait until I've got enough to afford one lol.

Just had a look on Autotrader and seen one for £2000, with 70k miles, which I dont think is too bad.
