Tipo (Classic) My Tipo 2.0 i.e Sedicivalvole

Red Tipo 16v

Introduction

Wait, let me just type that out again-

MY Tipo 2.0 i.e Sedicivalvole 🥰

I can’t quite believe it, as I have been obsessed with these since I was about 10 years old.

Let’s get the headlines out of the way-

89,500 miles, MOT until April, expensive tax compared to the Punto, fantastic noise- January 1993 so ULEZ complaint up here in Scotland.

This was on eBay watchlist for a wee while and I kept getting emails suggesting the seller was accepting offers, so after a few messages were exchanged it was bought. I got it far cheaper than it was originally listed for, and he was happy it was going to someone who is going to look after it.

It was picked up from derby 8am yesterday and delivered to me in Dundee at 5:45 last night. Poor driver’s water pump expired on his transit recovery truck so he had to change it in euro car parts car park in the snow. He had a bit of a bad day.

So the car- it’s fine. It’s in no way perfect as you would expect from a 32 year old Fiat with 11 owners, and there are quite a few jobs to do, but this is my forever car and I have plenty time to sort everything.

I gave it a very quick wash today as it was covered in salt from the journey up. There are a few little marks, and a bit of rust at the bottom of the quarter light windows on the back doors but all Tipo’s do that. It has been painted before and could benefit from a good deep polish which I will do, and have the bumpers a quick going over with owatrol, but will go over them again to bring them up.

Good bits- it’s been lowered around 30mm and drives very good, sits lovely too. It also has the standard, very valuable alloys which are in good condition for diamond cut wheels, with brand spanking new kumho’s.

Once it’s warm, it drives brilliant, and sounds awesome. It’s surprisingly quick- much faster feeling than my xc40 which is also a 2.0 with 150bhp, but in turbo diesel form.

It has also come with genuine Tipo Abarth accessory mats, and a stoplock.

The headlight wipers work, they are very random but they do work but are missing try the piping for the fluid, and the electric sunroof works too.

Bad bits- it really doesn’t like to idle when cold. It keeps cutting out. The window regulator on the passenger door is broken but the seller kindly provided 2 replacements. The headlining is manky, there is no radio and the wires have been chopped by some chimp, and the custom stainless exhaust is on the wonk so that’ll need straightened out.

The red stripes around the bumpers and skirts have shrunk a bit so need replacing at some point too.

Also someone has in the past put a bit spoiler onto it (which I don’t think does anything for it and ruins the back profile) and have fitted it by screwing into the window rubber.

There are a few electrical issues with things that don’t quite work but will work through fuses and bulbs over the winter. (The rear indicators are very dim I think so bad earth maybe?)

The Fiat badge on the front grille has been changed to black so will be going back chrome, and there are a few stickers/ badges dotted around that look ****.

The biggest problem by far however is that it’s too old to be listed on fiats system for parts numbers. I used to work for Fiat and asked ex colleagues to have a look at the history and nothing comes up for type 160 tipo’s anymore. Replacement parts will be like hens teeth too, so getting this into the same shape as my Punto is, will be a long, stressful and expensive road.

But how many people can say that have bought their dream car (I know it’s just an old tipo but I’m not wired up right obviously)

It’ll basically be going back to standard, except the suspension and exhaust, and if I get it anywhere near the condition of the Punto I’ll be a happy man. At least I own one now.

Talking of the Punto, that’s in storage now and unfortunately it has to go, so that will be up for sale soon 😞

If anyone wants it, message me.

Thanks

Simon
Mot passed- bit of work done but no advisories.

Exhaust replaced for NOS standard system
Oil cooler pipes replaced
Brake pipe and re bleed
Repaired door handle and nsf window regulator so it now locks and the window works 👍
Adjusted bonnet catch, power steering and aux belts
Fitted correct bolts to coolant pipes

Going to take it for a blast tonight.
Couple of wee bits I still need to do but that’s it mot’d for 13 months.

Got to be worth a fortune now 😂

Now the car is mot’d I have started on the irritating jobs.

not exciting I know but I’m just putting it here for a log of jobs carried out.

the electric sunroof- it works, but is slow, and rusty. I drove it with the roof open a couple of weeks ago and flakes of rust were blowing in my lap, so I got a wire brush, and black hammerite out to tidy it up. Luckily the sunroof is solid but just looked horrible.

also greased up all of the mechanism and hoovered and cleaned all of the **** out of the aperture in the roof. All working well now.

the spoiler had red overspray on it I noticed when that popped up so a quick blast of satin black took care of that also.

Slowly getting there.

More new stuff arrived, due to age and fragile plastics.
the number plate lamps snapped, when I was changing a bulb and cleaning them out, so ordered 2 new ones.

I also got a tip off, (cheers Steve gt for the WhatsApp message) of new genuine old stock headlamp wiper blades. I couldn’t hit buy it now quick enough. I’d changed the blades over with refills from Halfords as the originals were split, but it didn’t work too well. At least this has the proper genuine blades now that look correct now.

So, I’m looking for a bit of advice please.

I'm trying to go through the car and replace trim parts that are either missing/ have been vandalised in the past. There is a certain part in particular I cannot find as it comes as a whole unit- it’s the cover that goes over the electric sunroof emergency windy thingy- see photos below. It has no part number and I have checked that to replace it I have to buy the whole assembly with lights/ buttons etc.

what’s even worse that there is absolutely no need for a hole to be drilled into it, and it’s not even centred 😫

anyway, I plan on filling the hole, sanding it down and either wrapping/ painting the panel to match the rest. Can anyone recommend any wrap/ paint that would match and give a textured finish, to look like it does now?

also, more (expensive) parts coming from Italy, and Netherlands. I have found some unicorn parts to recommission the headlamp wash wipe- I hate things not working and everything must be just so. It’s the washer jets, piping etc that clips onto the headlamp wiper arms to squirt fluid onto the lights. The wipers work but there is no piping there just now. It seems I’m going down the same slippery slope as I did within the Punto- talking of which I think I’m going to tax it and MOT it start of April and use it a wee bit, as I haven’t touched it since November.

And the cee’d daily continues to impress, cheap to run, cheap to tax and amazing on fuel. That offsets my two polluting old Fiat’s, even though the inefficient 2.0 petrol Tipo that costs £30 a month to tax can enter Dundee city centre, but my 1.6 diesel, £35 a year cee’d can’t.
makes perfect sense 🤔

look up smart repairers they should easily be able to refurbish this, fill the hole, maintain the texture and match the colour.

you could probably look the process up on youtube.

A hole up there is likely for an old alarm LED or interior ultra sound sensor from an old alarm.

Its also possible that in the late 90s early 2000s someone put a car phone kit in and mounted the microphone up there, the old style phone kit with a cradle to connect the phone to the car.

Yeah haha. I have a list of part numbers on my phone for parts I would like to find, and every so often google them to see if they come up.
Also have a good mate who is a parts manager at a Fiat professional dealer so has access to Fiat for parts, so always check with him first before I search online.

Interesting that they've gone with a 30 year age limit for it to be a historic vehicle and not 40 years which is the UK standard to be tax/MOT/(most) ULEZ exempt etc.
My 25 year old 2.5 petrol is also exempt but it tends to all come down to NOx emissions which even old petrols tend to be lower than diesels that are 10+ years newer.
Sorry derailed a bit! Where did our 'off-topic' emoji go?

What about the tempra, saw one recently that was in exceptionally good condition, and there were two on flea bay, both of which had sunroofs.
