Sorry to hear about the car Smurf !! not good - (was it the main dealer who changed the timing chain btw ?)

The fuel is all much of a likeness, if you have a problem from a specific source is it 99.99% sure to be related to the supply and tank cleanliness / contamination at the filling station.

Yes, = Contamination.
Perhaps more googling is required for the others... nothing 'strange' sometimes the system fails..

I had been using a Fiat specialist. It was a guy who had worked for the main dealer in Belfast prior to that particular dealer losing the franchise. He then went out on his own. I just continued with him, however it would appear that substandard parts were used cause when the new main dealer got to the bottom of what was wrong, it was the guides that had failed on the new timing chain which had been installed last January.

Having got over the hurdle of getting the car running, the clutch failed the following day. Bad luck and I returned the car to the dealership for replacement.

Then just another couple of days later came brake failure! I then returned the car to the dealership for a full health check. It had been given a 'FULL' service just a fortnight before the timing failure and according to the report, the brakes were good! The dealership found however that the rear brake cylinders were both leaking. That had caused the rear shoe lining to break up and left me wondering if I would actually stop!

So all in all sticking with the so-called specialist wasn't a good idea at all! It wasn't any cheaper and could have had another (much worse) outcome, but I was lucky (if you could call it that)!!! Let's just say that the total bill was probably more than the car is worth!!!

I'd forgotten all about this post. I'm going to have a go at cleaning the MAF filter and air fliter housing thanks to hairyjim's excellent photographs.

I was interested to see in this image that there is only half a rubber seal at the firewall near the trailing edge of the bonnet. I thought it was only mine.

I'll disagree with you on one type of standard diesel versus another.

I usually use Maxol fuel but if I haven't been able to get to one of their stations, then I have maybe used Tesco. However once I used Sainsbury's diesel due to a 15p off per litre voucher when shopping. Hell will freeze over before I do that again! The drop in power was astounding and I had my own special smoke screen too! I thought something was wrong, however next tank was my usual supply and my car was back to normal.

I've run my MJ on Sainsbury's diesel almost exclusively for the best part of nine years and not really noticed any difference, but, it's possible that I've just got used to it.

However, I've filled up with Shell Advance for the last two tankfuls and will do for the next two as a comparison. The only thing I noticed was that the trip computer showed mid 50s mpg within a few miles of urban driving rather than
after 50 or 60 on the motorway. But by the time of the next tankful it was back to pretty much normal. For the next tank I'm going to bung some Redex in and see it that helps.

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread but just wanted to say how useful it has been after all the rain we have had! Yesterday I noticed a drip of fluid under our Cross and as it is parked nose down on a steep hill I assumed it was the usual scuttle drains. They were reasonably clear and when I flushed them through water drained in a different place to where the pool on the road was… Finding this thread I checked the air box and two things were obvious, there was water on top of it at the back and the filter housing was bowed out! Clearly I’d not been careful when fitting the filter, but at least the inside was dry except for on tiny patch near the MAF! Looks like I caught it just in time! I’d always noticed a bit of now dry sealant around the screw above the filter but had just thought it was a bodge as the screw had been loose . Now realising what it was for and that it had failed I pulled out all the old sealant, cleaned it up and applied a new liberal amount. I’ll be keeping a check on it now though!

Bear with me here - The radiator fan is attached with self tapping screws. Two of mine were rusty. I tapped the holes M6 and used large head stainless screws. The same idea will probably work with the air box filter cover using smaller screws (probably M5 or M4).

I have had a weird niggle though..over the last year probably..so @4,000 miles

Starts 'lumpy'...like a bad glowplug with a Cold Cylinder

Where you add a few Revs..and it then runs on all 4

HOWEVER...
No glow warning..and it does it on Hot starts..as well as Cold

Maybe momentary OVERFUELLING..??
Is smoky as its misfiring


Service history is patchy.. tried Posh Diesel..ZERO difference

MPG is always ok..levels all good

Check the fuel rail pressure and check the copper seal under the problem injector.
