Hey there,

I recently viewed a punto mk2 and there were a couple of issues that I wasn't sure about. I don't know an awful lot about cars so I thought it be best to ask here.

There was a high pitched noise coming from the left side of the car, it was loudest outside towards the back end of the car. The sound would start up slightly when the electrics are turned on and then continue while the car was running. The salesguy said that it was just the fuel pump and that it's normal, but other puntos didn't do it.

Then there was 2 rust issues. One was the suspension spring and the other was a piece of metal that seems to connect the back end of the car to the bottom of the bumper. It's not a major part, but both sides felt as if they were going to break if I put much pressure on. I've posted pictures so any thoughts would be great.

Hi,

sorry to say but ive broken up better,

id walk away from that one unless its realy cheap, the springs look expired/shocks brakepipes etc might be fubard, not a good motor to own come mot time, :(

theyre is some clean ones out there mate one will turn up, keep a watch on gumtree, ;)

Walk away
You can see the rust is already on the inner sills where the shock mounts

If they look that bad now

wait till you look at the floor underneath.... that'll be mostly rotten too

The wine is probably a speaker picking up a failing set of HT leads

Better mk2's out there for sure!

Out of interest, does anyone know what that white deposit is in the drums? It's not brake fluid, I think it's a corrosion byproduct (like zinc oxide), and appears in pits on the backing plate surface.

It Could have been brake fluid at one point? ate away at the dirt and paint but got washed off?

£650 tho - i'd seriously be tempted to have that! If it was nearer......

As daft as it sounds tho - i'd probably break it

Strip it down for parts, but im not so somebody could have a sweet runner

Break it why?

theres no money in these broken,

only things worth out is front bumper, gearbox headlights alloys
ecu, the rest of them gets thrown in a shed,

you can pick these up to break at 250 or less, 650 is way to expensive for a breaker,

I've seen the white crystals on my backplates. I have no brake fluid leaks, and the car is a regular runner. Mysterious. Wonder if it is road salt, I'll try and wash it off when I'm bored....

aye, thats what it will be mate,

wash it off and wire brush area and spray with some zinc paint and then black hammerite it ,

thats what mine are done with,

Hey guys,

Thanks for the responses! I'll take your advice and look elsewhere ;)

The reason I was interested in it was the price and mileage. It was about £700 with 43k warranted (apparently) miles. If it checked out okay, I would have done the check myself to make sure.

I'm glad I asked here, it seemed a bit excessive to me but wanted to make sure. I think the car has been around blackpool/coastal areas for a long time, gotta hate that salty air eh ;)

As for the Oldham car, that looks really good for that price. The car is actually going to be for my mum so I'll show it to her and see if she's interested (I can only assume she will be!).

Cheers guys,

Cheers guys,

@ £700 ithink the seller is a chancer, for that sort of coin look for mk2B whilst there cheap, agood mk2a is hard to find they live a hard life, mk2b is still relitivly young so there plenty of life in them,

for a good mk2a you need to be looking for one that an old chap has had and its spent abit of time in a garage out of the frost,
like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Only-1-fo...5425585?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item258c2b1cb1
I buys mines from Auction google Radcliffe car auctions, plenty bargains to be had there, ;)

I've been to a few car auctions, some of the prices that cars go for is just crazy. I see so many cars go for under £300. Sure there's the buyers premium to add but they're still incredibly cheap.

I've been horribly tempted to stick my hand up before, maybe one of these days I'll go for it ;) The only thing that puts me off is being unable to drive the car myself. If I had more mechanical know-how, I think I'd be more likely to do it.
