Tuning Mk1 Uno 1.4 T-Jet FIRE Turbo sleeper project

The base model 903 had the center console that stops after the stereo hole right to the end of MK1, not sure if it stayed with the MK2 until the base model got the punto box around about 1993. Could have been configured out along with the bottom shift box :)
Yeah, I know the shorter console was common in Mk1s, just didn't realise that the longer console was probably invented for the turbo in 86 and then used on other models as well, meaning models prior to that, don't have it at all.
Get your hand down the rear door cards and press inwards if you have not already.
Don't have rear doors. I don't understand what you mean. What am I checking for?

That is an amazing find Lewey, I didnt even realise they did a 3-door SX! It doesnt even have electric windows, which I thought were standard on the SX.. Has it got locking?

Not sure I`d want to modify it personally, it could conceivably be unique, but its your call.

Why dont you get a rust free late Mk2 shell & re-panel it as a Mk1?

There is a 5-door sill on ebay for £40 at the moment which will give you the front section of the door step as well as the full length of outer lower sill if you chop the B & C--pillar sections off, item number 300874148358.

Yeah, it is a curious one isn't it? It may be unique in the UK in that it is the only one that is likely to see the road again. There is a central locking icon with a bulb on the check panel, but haven't had a chance to check out the doors yet. I will remove the door cards and rest of interior soon to check it out. It certainly doesn't work if it exists.

You know my modding style, so you will appreciate that it will retain all of it's character superficially and most of the original driving character too. Can you really take a Mk2 and make it a Mk1? There are quite a few differences in the detail. Would need to have new front light panels welding in. Would also involve finding a mint Mk1 to remove it's panels and then pay for a respray. these are the only sort of things I can't do myself. Whilst the cars are cheap, this all doesn't seem worth it.

Thanks for the link. There is a 3 door passenger sill without a pic on eBay too (described as seconds).

He means the rear 1/4 trim cards, once they are off you can feel for rust on the inner sill/diaphragm panel by sticking your arm right down & pressing back towards yourself with your fingertips (oo err matron :D).

You can also stick a camera down to take pictures of the inside of the sills under the doorsteps, by pointing the camera towards the front, or you can use a thin torch with a small webcam on a laptop like a budget endoscope (y)

its also where you stick your Waxoyl extension tube down once you`ve got the sills rust free.

I just checked my library & it reads like this:

3-Door 70 SX limited edition launched in November 1984 but it doesnt say what the exact spec is other than "high spec".

5-door 70 SX in white or silver only in June 85.

SX replaced with the 70SL (5-door only) in August 85.

SL changed back to SX (5-door only) in December 86, mentions electric windows & infra red remote central locking.

I`d say yours is probably the only 3-door SX left, especially in that condition, & I`ve always loved that Fiat 5-bar velour trim, so it`d be a shame to use it for the project, but as I said, its your call!

I was under the impression all of the Mk1 main structure was the same as the Mk2, including slam/headlight panel & you could just swap the ends over?

(gone off searching for nude Uno shell pics)

Its hard to say, but these seem to show them as the same front panels between Mk 1 (left) or Mk 2 (right):

Sorry as a73uk says rear quarter cards for rusty inner sills... I did put rear doors in italics but it's not obvious.

To save you taking both Unos to bits...

Well, the red ones got a Mk1 bonnet, albeit with an RGA scoop on Louie!

Maybe there was a Mk1.5...

Personally I`d still go for the much more rust resistant & easier-to-get-hold-of Mk2 shell & re-paneling it as a Mk1, even if it meant cutting the headlight recesses out & re-welding, or even riveting in, Mk1 ones..

But I am a bit nuts.. Probably.. :D

Yer spotted the MK1 bonnet and wings (indicator hole larger), but someone may have had a front endder and fitted a MK2 headlamp panel. The tow eye vertical loop also looks MK1 as mk2 have a horizontal loop.

thinking about it I recall someone over on TC fitted MK1 headlamps/front end onto the MK2 and retaining the headlamp panel. can't remember who - maybe Shaun, Lee or the guy who also fitted the Uno45 with about 40 subs (sorry can't remember the name) . :)

I'm afraid that the new red car has turned out to be a proper little rust hider too. Almost everything I have removed from it on the outside has revealed rust. 3 out of 4 arch tops, rear panel behind bumper is not structually sound, already knew about the passenger sill and then I started on the front wheel well..

Pretty disillusioned right now. Have bought three cars to try to start this project. Have every part I need to do the work as well.

So anyway, a strange opportunity came up, so this project is parked for a bit whilst I decide what to do with the car and a new project is begun in it's place:

Zastava Yugo T-Jet Project!

Aww shame about the rust :( what wheels are they on the last pic of the red shell?
