Karbine's Golf Mkiv.

Introduction

Hey guys. As some as you know I sold my Punto mk1 and decided I wanted something different altogether. Something a little more luxurios spec wise and a nice interior.
So onwards and upwards I searched for a mkiv Golf.
Found one and picked it up last night from Newcastle with my Dad and Matty1303 from here.

It's got 104k on the clock and I paid £1250 in the end.
Paint work is pretty shabby but I'm not really that fussed. It's a 1.6 8v S (100ps) and has electric adjustable heated door mirrors, 5 doors with electric windows all round, PAS, adjustable steering wheel, 4 air bags, ABS steel wheels FTW! lol

I've got a few things planned but I'm not going to the extent of what I did with the mk1.
Plans are; Lower 45 or 50mm, OEM alloys maybe GTI or something (going to do a P/shop to see what they would look like gloss black), Debadge the rear and get a smaller Sharan badge and paint that black. Paint front badge too. And fit the box so that I have remote central locking rather than standard central locking. Maybe some other suggestions would be good :)

Anyway,, pics....

No, there isn't a contradiction there.

The 75 is on a proper Koni kit, whilst riding on standard wheels. Tightened it up for track use, but without ruining the ride and handling on the road.

The Cinq. is purely a track toy - I'm working on building something that'll be fun on the track for around a grand, including the cost of the car.

I've been playing around with cars and bikes for the thick end of 20 years now - one thing I learned early in my life was that, if the car is my only transport, then big wheels and cheap suspension kits just ruin the car's ride and handling.

They also make the car hard to sell on, and significantly de-value it. As well as hiking your insurance - at least until you are considered 'responsible' enough to modify cars without a premium loading....

What we have here is a housewife's 1.6 S Golf - which means no aircon, wind-down windows in the back (unless electrics were specced as an option when new) - big wheels and cheap coilovers will ruin the ride and handling, cost a fortune to keep in tyres, and cost a fair chunk extra on his insurance.

A 1.6 16v SE may have cost a little more to buy in the first place, but they're a much better spec. car, and as a standard car would end up costing less to insure than something with pointless mods.
And I think what we have here is someone who doesn't understand other peoples point of view. :')
And poverty spec? Since when was electric windows all round, heated wing mirrors, pas and al the other little gadgets that came included classed as poverty spec? :')

And I call bull****e on the modifications lowering selling on price, I bought my punto for £250 and sold it for £800! They lower the price if it is modified to the users complete taste, but subtle upgrades improve the selling on price... Fact. As demonstrated by me a few weeks ago! Sure i spent about £1200 on it but I had a lot of fun and have learned alot of things from doing this sort of stuff.

If you don't like what I intend to do then simply leave this thread. Simple "innit" :'D (;

Ohhhhhhhhhhh Steve you just got whipped like a bitch right then ^^^^

And yeah if you dont see the point then dont bother and i modded my car now its going for more than i bought it for so your just wrong

And whats wrong with a metallic green golf mods on any colour car will improve the looks if done right and performance will be improved its not impossible to mod performance on a 1.6l 8v.

If you cant see the point then dont but you dont have to try make others feel down about there cars just because its not to your taste every one is different ok

Yh quinn go by engine modds im with them aswel

dont think with your old age you have more sense than us you proobly forgot what you did to your cars when you wer 17 havnt you iss that how long ago it was???

That's poverty spec. in the Golf world, though - someone obviously specced the electric windows when it was new - but everything else about it is the most basic spec. you could buy!

I'm not slating anything - as I said, I'm offering advice based on experience.

You're going to ruin the handling and lose all suspension travel, how is that 'better'? - it may look 'wikkid, innit' at McDonald's car park, but it'll have made the car worse!

You hit on a certain demographic with the Punto - and managed to buy a dirt cheap one - don't believe you now have the midas touch! - 5 door Golfs have a very different target buyer than 3-door Puntos, so you're unlikely to turn in a profit on it or find it easy to sell on.

It's a nice car - but keep it nice - don't ruin it.

The best mods to keep it decent to drive and enhance the handling would be to source standard GTI wheels and suspension - should be plenty around in the breakers you can nick the bits from.

<shrugs>

I'm offering sound advice based on many years and many cars experience.

The mods won't improve the looks of a metallic green 1.6 Golf and they certainly won't improve the performance.

But each to their own. I just really can't see the point.
Look there you go again, "won't improve the looks of a metallic green golf"

3 words - Just watch me

:D

I'll be watching.

And laughing.

As you completely bugger up a nice car.

Do what you like - but don't be under any illusion that you've 'made it better'.

Fast Car forum is over there, somewhere...... it'll be better suited to your outlook.

okay so your trying to give advice and it would be good advice but its not asked for, at no point has the OP asked for advice on how to make his car perform better he wants to make it look better

it happens all the time people sacrifice practicality ect to have a really nice looking car that breaks all the rules and boundaries for example air suspension, deep dish alloys smoothing of locks ect

I'm pretty certain people who have been on here longer than you will back me up when talking about my styling technique. **** me, HA

Hmmmmmm mcdonald's:p

its his car youve given your view now its up to him wether to take you opinion or not about the suspension and he clearly isnt, its his decision if the handling is ruined (which it clearly wont) it will be dan's fault as he chose to do it, let him live and try and learn from his mistakes btw dan you wont make the handling ****e lol

And dan if you cant sell your golf for more when you finished modding it ill buy it off you for double the price just to shut Steve up

It's not about how long people have posted on here..... I was modding cars when you were a twinkle in your father's eye! - and posting on internet car groups before your parents had even thought of having you!

you have had your say your refusing to take other peoples views into consideration so please just stop posting in this thread and do us all a favour

thank you

No No it obvs is. You seem to have the impression that I'm crap at modding cars or have no taste. Again, your view is kinda worthless when you constantly contradict yourself.
And you had the internet 17 years ago?

50mm needs shortened shocks. Been there, done that. Learned from it.

And jip - I wasn't questioning parentage! - just that I was modding cars and bikes before most of you posting here were born. I can tell you a lot about what will and won't work, having made the mistakes myself, whilst you were still 'on the tit'.

im wondering about what discussion boards were around back then tbh

Erm, when did I contradict myself?

If it's worth doing - do it properly. Don't turn your car into something with all the handling qualities of Bambi on an ice rink.

Well, it was more like 20 years ago when I made my first public post.

And yes, if your grandad was modding cars back then, he can probably teach you a thing or two.
