Panda (Classic) John Dragon Man's 4x4 Sisley

Introduction

Hello!

Well, I have been waiting a long time to do this!

Introducing (Drum roll please!).....

Edit: about half way through the time it took me to get the car on the road it found the name Talon. So everyone Meet:
Talon. My Fiat Panda 4x4 Sisley:

Great Looking car.. As i am sure you all agree!

It has its Good points:

No Horrid noises in any gear and the 4x4 system works and sounds brilliant! Its a Sisley! And it came with some nice extras such as the light grill covers.

and also nice low mileage.

And it has its bad points... Lots of bad points:

Mid body rust, This is the worst on the drivers side (in the UK) front wing:

The Doors are Rusty.. Ok, i did expect this as it seems to be a common thing on most Fiats over 10-15 years old:

And the other Door, Not as bad.. I may be able to save this side!

"Phantom Electronics" the electronics do what they want to do, when they want to do it. No Switches necessary!

Also the Fuse box now lives here :( That means that a flap has been cut in the pocket :(

The Exhaust is very broken, in multiple parts. even the down pipe!

Lastly and by far the worst, Under body rust. Now its not as bad as it could be. The rear sills on both sides have a small 1 - 2 inch hole in them. No biggy.
I have still yet to remove all the plastic wheel arch liners and have a proper look.
Here's a picture from the front drivers side wheel arch, its only a skin so a easy repair:

A bit of work needs doing to the brakes, pads i think. The fluid needs changing and the drivers side front brake pipe is corroded so i will replace that.

Also the engine needs a good cleaning up, a full on service replacing the water pump, cam belt, tensioner pulley, distributor cap and rotor arm, filters, oil, radiator, coolant and starter motor.

I also need a few things like a locking filler cap, the little clips that hold the air box together, a new boot gas strut and a non damaged back bumper.

Its the car I have always wanted right from when I was a young lad. So you can imagine how I was when I won it on eBay for a grand total of £547. Getting it from Wales To my home town of Derby Cost me £135.

With some love, care and late nights I reckon I can turn it into a cracking motor!

Oh and stay tuned as I will be keeping a Video Log of what I will be doing to the car on Youtube!

This is the video i took just as the car transporter left from delivering it:

I am so very proud to be the owner of a Fiat Panda 4x4 Sisley!

:D:D:D

Edit: this is how Talon looks now:

:eek::cool::cool::cool::yum:

Since then Talon has gained more lights, and now has some blue rust free Seat Marbella doors. I had also converted him to Fuel injection, however the parts i used were old and worn so now it is back on Carburettor.

This thread has its ups and downs but through the years Talon and myself have pulled through.

When you are done reading this thread, be sure to check out the little red scrap yard rescued Seat Marbella thread and also Project Fallout!

Peace all and enjoy the thread, videos and pictures!
see i'm more of a suzuki sj or nissan patrol (260 series, not the fat round-y new ones) kinda guy when it comes to off-roaders - both of which are on my 'to own one day list'

I used to have a Range Rover classic many years ago so definitely a landy lover

It had a suspension and body lift huge tyres on the classic 16" 3 spoke alloys and a powerful 3.1 turbo diesel Isuzu engine, sold it to an guy who did off road trials

I'm a newb to zombie lighting but doesn't it draw them towards the source?

zombie lights are UV lights ;) you watched The Strain right?

yeah its a cool switch.. but i am making my own kinda thing... that one looks too.. "clean" or modern.

as for 4x4's i like the Suzuki sj410 (hard back) or the older daihatsu fourtrak

trouble is, i dont know which one i would like out of the two.. the suzuki or the daihatsu :/

it something i want to get when i feel it is time for Fallout to have a new keeper.. but that will be a fair few years after i get him on the road.. unless some one come to me with an offer i cant refuse that is lmao

i think i wanna get one of these next in terms of lighting..:

i'd still like an SJ hard back that is solid. i would not care if it was beaten up.

i bought some new wipers for Talon today, front and back. first time i have bought new wiper blades for any of my cars. normally i always got them from the scrap yard for free.

talon has just turned over to 48000 miles too.. well about 40 miles ago.

also added some replacement rear speakers (some 4 inch scrapyard find jobbies made by kenwood quite modern looking) as the originals has some pretty bad foam rot. managed to make the new ones look just like the old ones though using the original dealer fit speaker covers.. i am quite happy with that. :D

one little thing i have done is drill a tiny 3 or 4 mm hole in the lowest part of the back box as a condensation drain. Talon failed the smoke test twice when he was in for his MOT because of the amount of steam he was making.. when i drilled the hole, loads of water came out. it was actually the MOT tester that suggested i do it.
seems like a good call.

also after ages of running around my tank got to about 1/3 full. so i decided to fill the tank to full. i have recorded the mileage, (48042 miles) so i will see how far a tank gets me. i will take it all the way down to the minimum "no fuel left" mark. (dont worry i have driven talon many miles past the "no fuel left" mark) then when i fill it again count how many miles i have done... see if i can work out Talons MPG

well that is all to report.

I use fuelly, it works really well! My parade is currently getting 41.7 mpg, I'm interested to see how the sisley compares :)

You're being mean and not driving him hard enough, that what it is.

Talon has been a bit chilly when out on trips. not sure why.. but guessed it to be the thermostat.

today i changed it over with a new one, just to be sure.

heres a few pictures of the old one..

so it doesn't look bad..

yeah.. nothing seems wrong..

lets take a better look at this..

ah

hmm so. there you go. that is what.. 2 years old? shameful.

i have also been playing around with the throttle position sensor. the way you adjust it on this is by moving the whole sensor. its quite a funny way of doing it but it works well.

talon now idles quite low now.

i did have to redo all the timing again. sadly with no timing gun i am mostly doing it by ear. keep backing off until it stops knocking through the rev range. it is how i did it last time, and it has worked really well.

i also changed the manifold coolant temperature sensor over too (dont worry guys with carbed pandas, you dont have this) as i suspected it was not working correctly making the ECU think the engine was still running cold.

i give the lambda sensor a good probing with the multi meter too.

i have good resistance between the 2 white wires (the heater) and when up to temperature and running the voltage it gives is constantly changing, but normally around 0.500v. (give or take a few millivolts)
thing is though when i make it more rich it makes the voltage go up... im not sure but i thought the voltage should go down when it detects a more rich mixture. all lambda sensors work the same way, so maybe it is just me.

anyway that is all for this episode, stay tuned for more updates :D

Good fix mate! Bit dissapointing after only two years use tho?

What a luxury being able to buy things from the dealer! Every fiat dealer I can find within 50 miles won't let me order parts if its not a current production car. Typical Scotland :(

The Fiat dealer in Perth is really good. Will even order from Italy bits unique to the Y10. If you really need something I'll order it for you.
