.. I would therefore still call out the AA, let them look at it and if necessary, get them to recover it to the dealer and have it fixed under warranty.

I double checked the AA cover that I have here in Ireland (UK is currently 1 year) and I was surprised to learn that I have 4 years full AA cover until June 2013 (this came free with the car). This means that if the car breaks down it is towed free of charge. It's worth €189 pa for the 'full package'. I remember a colleague of mine taking out a 'cheaper' AA package and pushing the car up the road to avoid the 'Home start' premium but that wouldn't be very honest.:idea:
The other package of accident breakdown cover is not on offer here but can that extend to 'mechanical' break down cover ?

After a week at the dealers they replaced the fuel pump under warranty and all is now well with my world :) Thanks for all your advice.

Thanks for reporting back and I'm glad to hear your pride & joy is now restored to its former glory.

But I can't help thinking that in days gone by, the AA would have been able to diagnose fuel starvation on the spot .

What was the reason for the job taking a week? Parts availability, I guess.

Why bother when there's warranty I guess.

When the Subaru's fuel pump died a few years ago they diagnosed it on the spot.
