So my friend is trying to install instrumental cluster from punto mk2b to mk2b. Of course it fits but proxy is problem he gets "unknown error"?

Hello,

I can't imagine how it could work. Both engines have different ECUs and as I assume the instrument cluster is getting most of the data from the ECU, they should be somehow paired. Perhaps another diesel engine's cluster would work (another displacement or power), but petrol and diesel engines have completely different engine management systems, so most probably the data received / transferred is completely different.

I've just checked in ePER, there are 7 different instrument clusters diagrams for the 2006 mk2 Punto. In total they list 96 (!!!) part numbers, and 43 specifically for diesel engines :D However I have not compared the part numbers on each diagram, so the number might be smaller after deduplication.

One thing I've noticed going through ePER: the Natural Power version (methane powered) cluster seems to appear on several diagrams as the same part number as for one of the diesel engines. I'd they say it could be the closest match.

I don't know if you're familiar with ePER, if not PM the VIN of the diesel car, I could check it for you tomorrow evening.

Thanks for the answers. Here's what really trips me up the most: One guy managed to make it work, swapping from a 1.4 petrol to a 1.9 diesel, without any trouble. And here I am, trying to swap a cluster from a 1.4 to a 1.2 petrol, and I'm getting the same 'unknown error'.

at launch in 1999 the mk2 had the option of a 1.2 1.4 or 1.8l petrol and a 1.9L diesel.

When the mk2B was launched in 2003 the 1.3 multijet engine was brand new technology. so likely that the older engines were all originally designed along the same lines but new systems were added to the communication protocols for the new engine option. It is potentially like saying. I have smashed the screen on my 2019 iPhone, why won't the screen from this 2024 iPhone work....

The answer is they are different generations of technology/differences and evolution of things over the years.

the 1.2 is the budget iPhone that when generations without being updated, because it just carried on doing what it needed to do.

With all due respect, I am quite sure there was no 1.4L version from '99. They came out with the MK2b, which is the same as the 1.3L. Therefore, clusters from the MK2b are not compatible with the MK2a due to the older body computer, and that makes sense. I successfully managed to install the cluster, and everything works great—Trip B, I installed the temperature sensor, and I even managed to correct the mileage with the Fiat KM tool. I also found a guy who installed a cluster from a 1.4L into a 1.2L, so that should work as well.
