Finally collected it today after enough weeks of waiting....

Bear/bare? in mind that I've been driving a nice torque'y diesel (2 litres of).. and I've also driven several other cars recently (mitsubishi Lancer basic model, Skoda Fabia, vauxhall Astra, Transit Connect, Vauxhall Vivaro van etc ). So I'm well aware of other cars and what I could reasonably expect from a decent vehicle... I'm also aware that its only done 30mile (plus whatever was done in delivery prior to manfactuers/dealer reset) and things will loosen up and get a bit better .......also consider I'm 6'2" and no bean pole.....

I wasn't sure about its looks when I first saw one.. now as more and more small squarish cars are on the road and this one is mine I'm liking it a lot more.. (don't get me wrong, someone gave me the keys to an AC Cobra or the older Mitsubishi Lancer VR4 Estate and I'd be off..)...

So I had a good look around and other than a slight trace of polishing on the body work (which was properly done when I pointed it out) everything looked spot on. All buttons and switches (what there is of them) worked. Generally a tidy 'little' motor.

First seat I sat in was the rear one... If I can get in then anyone can... With the drivers seat right back I could just about get in, bit squashed, legs splayed to the sides and pressing into the seat back.. (like flying in cattle class without getting extra legroom upgrades). We got the extra third rear seatbelt option and to be honest if you had 3 large blokes in there you wouldn't want to be going far ! However you could get in 3 grandchildren or two less than rugby playing sized adults and a child between....

Right back into the driver seat...this is the bottom of the series with the minimal spec.. This means you don't get keyfob central locking (you do get key operated central locking though) and only the general basics you get on all cars (heater, recirculate, heated rear window etc..) On top of the basics it also has adjustable headlight hight (for when the rugby players and in the back weighing it down) and rear windscreen wash/wiper. Our spec said we get the basic Cd/Radio but its actually got the Cd MP3/Radio fitted (which is in the models higher up the range).

There is more room in there than you think and it surprised me how roomy it feels when I pushed the seat right back. Plenty of room for my long legs and enough room to get my shoulders in without too much banging and crashing. The door does feel a little close to my side but its like all cars I've been in, you find some bits stick out until you get used to them....

So it started up first turn and purred away... Gear selection with the high mounted gear stick is nice and tight and the pedals easy and light... (now remember I've been in a diesel for years) So off we go... picks up well (not hammering it, just gently out of the car park) but nothing sluggish from its tiny 1.1 engine. Once onto the main road and a little more gas, again nothing showing any signs of struggling... off it went.. eased upto 30mph without a problem... upto motorway speed nice and easy with no complaints... As far as driving it sedately I can't see any real difference in the get up and go from the old diesel ! Its quite a joy to drive, and I've been and done 30miles without any discomfort.

If I was to pick holes in things... the rear view mirror gives a narrow view between the rear seat rests and the door mirrors show a different scale so its taking a little adjusting to how close things are following and if its a good time to change lane or not... Oh an "CITY" Mode...LOL LOL LOL what is that about?... If I only had one finger and that was really weak then I might consider putting it on ! The steering is really light without needing that mode, I've parked up in some tight spots etc and didn't think "oh this is hard work with the steering being so heavy" the word gimmick springs to mind...

so far, 30mile in.. I'm impressed... its a great 'little' car, drives so easily, plenty of room (for a small car) and its looking like its going to be cheap on fuel (the thirty mile has taken the needle from covering the little dot that marks 1/4 of tank, to just about leaving it... so its moved about 1mm...)

I'm actually more impressed than I was expecting.. (we didn't have a test drive when ordering, as they didn't have any left to go in !).. I thought I'd end up with a lot of niggles that I'd just have to live with... but so far I'm liking it !

Steve

Looks nice. Should be collecting my 1.1 active eco next Thursday. Bit worried to be truthful as I also didn't get a chance to testdrive. Thought I must of been mad but we'll soon see soon enough.

Lovely little Panda you've got there! Looks brilliant in black and the body coloured bumpers really finish the Active off. Before, when they only came with unpainted black plastic bumpers, it looked really basic, but that looks really classy. I also prefer the 'holey' grille of the Active too. Hope you continue to enjoy it! :)

looking good!...much like my black series two...I prefer that grill to mine, and those wheel trims and the basic instrument cluster...much 'purer'...i'm not complaining though, cracking motor...you don't really need a test drive :)

I leave my city button on all the time...wasn't sure at first but, if it's there, why not use it? :)

Good review (y)

Much the same as my thoughts,a great little car that gets better as the miles increase.
Very minor niggles are..
no remote boot release (a pain on the active as you need to use the key)
The stereo power switch !!
and thats it!!
My G/F wanted a car as close to her Cinq as possible and on that basis we can't complain.

:( Was hoping it would be colour coded with car. Just think it would look better. Personal opinion only mind you. We'll soon see. When I collect next Thur I'll take plenty of photos and post on here.

one of the reasons we got ours in black !...

no the rubbing strips (no longer an option on the series 2) and the grille are both in a very dark grey/black plastic no matter what the colour.

spotted these two in the carpark when we were picking ours up... the one on the left is an 06, the one on the right is 04... both look like the grills being used now but just a little different..

And notice the difference on the Active on the left, compaired to the grills on all the other speced Panda's (except 100hp which is different again).

another photo just in case anyone wants to see under the bonnet

Wow Cinquecento Sporting flashback....!I remember gutting that big plastic airbox with a Stanley craft knife and connecting a length of tubing to a cone air filter .Combined with a discrete hole cut in the plastic trim near the bonnet it gave a small but noticeable boost in power ...

I picked up my Panda Active Eco back in September. Its also black and also has the side rubbing strips. I was expecting to really struggle with it as my previous car had a big V6. However the Panda impressed me in September and has continued to impress me every single day. It isnt quick but around town its plenty quick enough. I am just over 6 foot and theres plenty of room for me although on very long journeys the seats can be very uncomfy.

I didnt bother with a test drive either I just had a good sit in the car and played with all the buttons. My first ever car was an original Panda Super and that was a fantastic little machine. So I knew I could trust Fiat to make a great little car as they are the masters at it.

I finally collected my white panda 1.1 active eco on thur 17th Dec. I wanted to cover some miles before posting my opinions etc.

I've now covered 150 miles and I adore this little cracker. If you use the gearbox correctly its really lively. I've been astounded by so many things. The build quality is exellent. The seats, interior and clunk of the door easily compares to that of my sister's vw polo. Its engine is quite right until you rev it hard. Handling isn't bad and the turning circle made me laugh. You could turn it on a penny. The mirrors do seem a little large but they don't bother me and you can see the whole world behind you. I also like the fact the rear parcel shelf stays straight and does not rise and smack you in the chin as the boot rises. I added an italian bonnet & roof stripe set along with some discreet badges to compliment the car and I think it looks great. Filled the tank up for the first time yesterday, £32.50 from empty ! LOL. Brill.

My only gripes which are trivial is the on/off button on the radio, no boot release in the car and for some bizarre reason when I put the key in the ignition if I don't turn it fully all the way 1st time I have to take it out and re-insert it. weird.

Overall a truly cracking car for very little money. LOVE IT TO BITS.

yeah the boot is a bit of a pain.. when you are dropping someone off and you have to switch off, remove the key and open the boot...

not sure what you mean by the on/off switch on the radio ? you press the volume control in to switch it on, press and hold to switch it off on ours !

have you not been in the boot and forgotten to put the parcel shelf down though?... lol.. set off.. hang on where is the world behind...

I shockingly had a look at the instructions the other day and discovered other little hidden features of the car.. one being the "follow me home headlights" where as you are getting out you can leave the headlights on to light up your walk to the house...(turn ignition off and remove key then simply pull the light stalk as if flashing high beam, one pull leaves the normal dipped beam on for about 30 seconds, you can add more time by pulling a few times)...
