Technical Im stumped - coil pack 1 (maybe)

4ohms in a wire is high
Let alone 7ohms

Something is causing this like a trapped wire which has freyed

My advice is seriously strip that loom out and trace each wire carefully

The wires as far as i know should be nice and low like .5ohm really

Also on the coil pack u should have 0.49 - 0.6 ohms on the low tension
And about 6600ohms - 7120ohms iirc

Thanks Ziggy,

So to be clear is the stripping out of the loom just for say those wires between coil pack and ecu?

is that a small loom that i could maybe replace with a scrappy loom and plug and play?

Right ive tested for u
Using a paperclip to probe ecu connector

I did a pretest with the 2 test leads connected via paperclip
Returning 0.4 ohms to start with

1 side has 0.8 - 0.4 from leads = 0.4 ohms resistance from ecu to coil
Other way 0.7 -0.4 from leads = 0.3ohms for the other

Either if i didnt do th pretest with my meter 0.7 & 0.8 are alot alot better then yours

From quick look i cant see a remove and replace setup of coil section
You need to find break first or you need a donor loom

This is all assuming rac man got accurate results

Thanks for doing that Ziggy

I have just been onto Ebay to look for a replacement loom. there are a few for the engine, what is the loom im needing called?

Thanks again

Ok but at the risk of sounding like a complete clown.... im just checking the wires between the coil packs and the ecu or do i have to check every wire?

The coils have a shared +ve feed that also is the +ve feed for the injectors

You need to be checking the earthing wire as the ecu switchs the earth on and off to control each coil

Trace it back, but please note it has most of it covered by that ribbed stuff and a large chunk is bundled up in a shield that can be tricky to open with the poor access

Id be incline to get the wires tested again to ensure he didnt give you a duff reading

Ok.... back to my ECU :)

I have had an autospark out and he has tested the wiring etc as I was unable to find and problems. He has confirmed that there is a short inside the ECU unit... think he said it was an open circuit and showed me what this meant.

He disconnected the leads on the coil pack and in turn put a probe to each connector (on the lead) on one the light on his tester lit up and on the other connector (same lead) the light did not come on which was correct.... Moving to the faulty lead both connectors lit up the bulb.

He said that this problem may have damaged the coil pack also.

So... I called the ECU company and explained the above and they want me to go off and have the car put back on a computer to give them the fault codes.... The car doesnt run... and I dont have time with work and to be honest the attitude of the staff on the phone just makes me not want to bother with them.

A new ECU is around £450 which is too much and so I was looking at these guys who supply lock kits, ECU's and all bits to replace my unit and at a price that seems ok..

But as I am not a mechanic I was wondering if you lads could give me a steer at all please on if this option is a decent one.

Thanks again for your help

i wont use them anymore and i have

with regards your problem
you need to post up spec year mileage etc of your car before we can advise

Thanks to both.

Oldhammer, I see your guy supplies the gauges while others dont. are these needed as part of the change?

nope not needed realy but your mileage will flash.
so swapping these clocks over will save you from that,

ecu swap involves mileage being messed with im afraid,
unless you buy aplug and play virginised ecu,

with yours being a late mk2b these might be very expensive,
the kit in the link is cheap ithink for what you get with it,

Oldhammer, the guy you put me in touch with was great at helping out but doesnt have my type of ECU, its a P4 which he says dont come up often.... something I had noticed myself over the past few weeks.

Unless I can get one I will have to get shut of the car.. Its a pity because with a new MOT and tax along with 70k miles it really was a great little car for me.

ok sorry to hear that mate,

best bet is ask all the breakers on ebay,

took me ages to find a p4 too
i got one off a mk2b active sport i think
then had it blessed
im working on an alternative to these p4s
