Tuning how fast can u make a punto turbo, which is best gt or hgt?

hi i was just after some advice really im looking at buying a car 4 1/4 mile racing and have been looking at fiesta rst but thinking punto turbo but was wondering how fast you can make them and whats the best way 2 do it? any help would be great thanks you all seem a very helpful group

OP has been edited due to the forum being international and not everyone finding text talk easy to read.

Also should have said CAM BELT. Doh !
Though the fan belt gave me some serious grief fitting it.

For ultimate 1/4 mile I would go for a mid mounted big bike engine in a small chassis like a Punto Mk1 or even a Seicento. Even though the latter isnt that stable in a straight line.

A guy on here posted lots of stuff about his Hyabusa Punto then it all went quiet. He must have spent megabux.

Who knows he might even be open to offers on it.

Here's the engine stuff

Turbo kits take it up even further and need unbelievably deep pockets but its still very light weight for the power it makes

But everyone uses the Busa engine so its expensive. Kawasaki do a 1400 Honda's Fireblade 1000 and the Yamaha R1 or GSXR are all candidates.

Re: hw fast can u make a punto turbo n which is best gt or hgt?

play,

There are very few tuning options for the HGT, so you won't get much more than 130 BHP, and the HGT is heavier than the GT.

On the GT, as long as you get a GT3, you can break 200 BHP with reasonable investment of time and effort. Start searching for terms such as 'Front Mount Inter-Cooler (FMIC)', 'SEB chips', 'Garrett' etc...

Also search the project threads. Superman Dan was particularly handy with the camera and descriptions whilst building the 226 BHP 'The Mint GT'. I believe he got that car to less than 900 kgs, which means a power to weight ratio of more than 250 BHP per tonne!

hi mate can you leed me to someone that knows about tuning punto gt turbos im in the motor trade and rebuilding and doing everything i can but i need to know whats been tried and tested lol many thanks paul

You want to head over to www.puntosportsclub.co.uk/forums and take a look at the projects page. There's a lad over there by the name of 'Superman' (Dan) that had 226 BHP out of the GT. He's now got rid of his Puntos in favor of an Evo (the Mitsubishi type, not Fiat), but still hangs around the forum and is most helpful.

Typically though, the recipe goes somewhat like...

Bigger turbo (Owen's Developments modified Garretts seem to be the turbo of choice)
Turbo hardware (standalone dump valve, boost controller etc...)
Aluminium front-mount intercooler and piping
Dr Evil turbo elbow (search that forum for 'Dr Evil' to have one made)
SEB map-on-a-chip (search forum for 'Mr Hans' for supply, he's a bit of a argumentative bighead at times, but knows his stuff)
Bigger aluminium radiator
Bigger injectors (size depending on stage of tune)
Coupe fuel pump to feed larger injectors
Forged pistons
Forged con-rods
Lightened and balanced crank
ARP bolts
Uprated cam

With that little lot, you'll have a car with far too much power for its chassis to handle, so you may wish to consider...

Uprated springs and dampers (such a diverse topic, I shall not discuss here)
Uprated anti-roll bars (Only Eibach do these for the GT, and there's only like 100 in the country. Balance Motorsport claim to be able to get hold of them new though)
Strut brace
Uprated tyres (for fast-road, sticking with 14" is probably best)
Uprated brake pads (for fast-road, the GT3 Bendix (not GT1 Girling) calipers and 257 x 20mm discs up front are fine, just invest in good pads like Ferodo DS. Aluminium alloy rear calipers are available as an option for reducing unsprung weight at the rear.

If considering track-day use, add the following...

Coilover suspension
Race seat with four-point harness
Roll cage
Uprated front brakes (will require 16" wheels with 195/40 R16 tyres, Brembos 4-pots from the Coupe with custom brackets and Coupe discs are a common upgrade, less common is a Wilwood setup, and if you are feeling flush (£1500), AP Racing do an excellent front kit for the GT. Exercise care with the Wilwoods since they are not dust sealed)
Plumbed-in fire extinguisher
Quaife LSD (there is a group-buy for these on PSC, but don't expect to get your hands on one anytime soon)
