Tuning how fast can u make a punto turbo, which is best gt or hgt?

hi i was just after some advice really im looking at buying a car 4 1/4 mile racing and have been looking at fiesta rst but thinking punto turbo but was wondering how fast you can make them and whats the best way 2 do it? any help would be great thanks you all seem a very helpful group

I remember someone on PSC managed 300BHP out of their 1.4 punto GT but that was with a stupid amount of modifications

my mechanical bck ground isnt gr8 ive worked on my old scoob bt my m8 works for z cars so hell be doing most of the work. once ive decided ill post sum pics fanx

There are very few tuning options for the HGT, so you won't get much more than 130 BHP, and the HGT is heavier than the GT.

On the GT, as long as you get a GT3, you can break 200 BHP with reasonable investment of time and effort. Start searching for terms such as 'Front Mount Inter-Cooler (FMIC)', 'SEB chips', 'Garrett' etc...

Also search the project threads. Superman Dan was particularly handy with the camera and descriptions whilst building the 226 BHP 'The Mint GT'. I believe he got that car to less than 900 kgs, which means a power to weight ratio of more than 250 BHP per tonne!

Honest John is quoting it as 130 BHP. Typically, Fiat do underestimate the figures, so I suppose 140 BHP might be more realistic. By the book however, I think it is 130 BHP though. The problem with the HGT engine is that very few tuning companies do anything for it. For the GT engines, you're spoilt for choice.

With reference to the 300 BHP 1.4 GT engine, I believe that one was a projection from a measure 275 BHP plus a few extra goodies which the owner estimated to be 300 BHP. However, if it is the one I am thinking of, he had to rebuild it practically every weekend. The Fiat Coupe 16VT engine can produce 300 BHP more comfortably. It fits the mk1 without chassis modifications (unlike the 20VT) but requires many £££s for custom fabricated parts. Whilst more reliable than the 300 BHP 1.4, it isn't without faults.

However, for drag racing, wouldn't a RWD platform like an old BMW 3-series do the job better?

HGT is 130 standard. Can see 150+ with induction/exhaust. Deffo easier to tune a GT though.

Doesn't matter its still front wheel drive and getting the power down without wheel spin would be nigh on impossible.

Best fiat for drag racing would be a coupe. But even that is FWD but has a lot more traction than a punto.

If you want real performance at any cost why not a mid mounted bike engine in a Seicento. The 1300 Hyabusa makes silly power but theres offerings from Honda Yamaha and Suzuki. You also get clutchless gearchanges and rev limits in the teens. :devil:

But such a thing wont be cheap. I did some rough calcs and reckoned on £3000 minimum for the engine installation. Roll-cage, brakes, suspension (and the original car) who knows what it will cost. But it would be just a bit quick.

Personally, I would love to do a front mounted bike engine conversion. Not because its the best handling balance; just because it would embarrass pretty much everything else on the road and would still be practical (ish).

Would love to have the money for a proper mid-engine Punto project. Including brakes, cage, suspension etc, I reckon we're talking at least £5000.

Back to the original question. I have a 2001 HGT Abarth which is actually a great car. OK, the fan belt broke 2 days after I bought the thing but it's hardly the cars fault the muppet owners (me included) neglected to service it.

If you can afford the insurance the HGT would be a good choice. They are quite rare and it's not all about max power and doing the numbers. As for reliability, they need to be looked after - 130 to 140bhp from 1747cc is going some.

I suspect the mechanics are not so keen because its a pain to work on with that lump shoe-horned in and the lack of useful workshop manuals wont help.

As for fuel consumption, mine is showing 54mpg on the trip computer - most of that is post engine rebuild and new cam belt. We'll see how it stacks up on the next fill.
