Holy crapsicle!!!!!!!

Well I am a bit worried about my work, as some may know of the bad stocktake, we are due another near to xmas to check if we have improved, if we havent i shall be waving goodbye to my job.

Also as a deputy manager i can be replaced by a supervisor who gets paid less as there is no real difference in jobs, both have same security level on tills, its just a case of learning how to do the paperwork.
I suppose at the minute i should be fine as the no2 in the company visited the otherday and was quite impressed with our takings considering there is a Tesco Express 2 or 3 shops away from us.

I really feel sorry for you guys  This country really needs to do something to sort itself out like money grabing lazy bums geting jobs so there is a better flow of money and more tax funds available to help those who really need it.
I am very lucky i live at home because i refuse to pay rent to somebody when the same amount of money could go towards a Mortgage but obviously in the last year i could have possibly saved up but i can wait, I dont want to live in - Equity.

My job is prety safe i am a Graphic Designer and we have been geting more clients since the downturn of the Economy probably due to the market geting very competative so people want top notch designers (y) to make there company more elastic.

the list of doom hasnt come out yet but i've made an appointment with HR for tomorrow to find out the full details of the company's voluntary redundancy package.

if what i have been told is true i would get 90days pay plus an extra 2 weeks pay for working 2 full years and another 6 days pay for holidays i have left. the 90days would be tax free. in total that would be enough money for me to survive for at least 4 months, giving me ample time to get a better job.

i'm planning to negotiate a slightly better deal tomorrow. i'm thinking they desperately need to get rid of people so instead of fighting for my job i should take this opportunity to negotiate a good pay-off deal and walk out the door before i'm pushed. fingers crossed they make me a good offer.

then again, i doubt i'll get paid to play on fiatforum all day in my next job so maybe leaving would be a bad thing. :D

Having just been through this, and started my new job yesterday, I hope all goes well. I could have delayed my redundancy until around March time, but I reasoned that jobs may be harder to come by then, so I took the money and ran. :)

Your redundancy package looks to be the minimum but with two exceptions:
1. Payment in lieu of notice (PILON), and
2. Statutory redundancy payment based on your salary, rather than the £330 cap.

But if the 90 days are in lieu of your notice period, then it may be difficult to get them tax-free. The Inland Revenue position is quite clear on this - if it is payment in lieu of notice then it is taxable. There may be ways around this, but if the IR get wind that you are trying to avoid paying tax on PILON then they will claim it. There is an agreement (I forget the legal term) which means that your employer is paying you a figure in compensation for terminating your contract, but this leaves you no rights for any future claims against them, e.g. unfair dismissal. This may be the way to go. Also, your employer may have a way around this, based on standard practice at your company - check this with your HR.

The 2 weeks statutory payment is tax-free, but your employer is only obliged to pay you 2 x £330 maximum (even if you earn more than £330 per week, which I am guessing you do). If they do pay you more than 2 x £330, then it's still tax-free (up to £30,000 ).
If you do manage to negotiate any improvement, then make sure it is an enhancement to your redundancy package, so it's tax-free.

If they want you to finish, say, at Christmas, then maybe your employer would agree to you starting your notice period now, so you work half your notice period (taxed of course), and at Christmas they pay you an enhancement to your redundancy package which just happens (by coincidence) to be equal to half your notice period but tax-free (along with the remaining half of your PILON - taxed).

nice post thanks (y)

in my meeting tomorrow i plan to find out how the 90day pilon is tax free, because i also thought it must be taxed. i do not plan to work any of the 90 days.

asking people at work about the PILON tax issue. it seems you dont pay tax on PILON unless your contract says you are entitled to PILON. mine makes no mention of it so my PILON will be tax free. :slayer:

From Direct.Gov:

Is your notice pay taxable?
If you work your notice, you'll be taxed at the usual rate on the money you earn in your notice period.
PILON is only taxable if it's been provided for in your contract or is customary. Otherwise, it is not taxable unless the PILON together with redundancy and other compensation adds up to more than £30,000, in which case the excess over £30,000 is taxable at the usual rate.

I couldn't argue that, because it was customary with my old employer. :(

When I looked into it, I was led to believe that the Inland Revenue had sharpened up on this. Even if PILON isn't specifically included in your contract, then the fact that your employer offers it can be construed as a change to your contract terms, so IR could claim that your contract had been changed to include PILON :bang:
I found some guidance on the IR website, but I think I left the references in my folder at the old job. (I was an employee representative, so I left all my notes for those being made redundant next year). If your HR will agree to paying it tax-free, then good luck - knowing your guile, you may be able to get the payoff letter worded so that any tax claim by IR will be met by your employer ;)

i had a meeting with HR and my manager this morning. my deal is done. next monday is the formal meeting during which i will get my deal officially offered to me on paper.

i dont need to work from today until the end of the year but i will be given full pay (i can still come to work if i want to lol). in january i will be given a compensation payment roughly equal to 3 months wages. i will also be given support finding another job and i'm guaranteed the best reference on earth.

so i'm looking at a nice long holiday until january, and hopefully between now and then i can find another job to start in january, meaning my compensation payment will be free money. if i cant find a job that easily i've still got 3 months money to live off and a very long holiday to play with. if i cant find a job by the end of march i'm in trouble, but i doubt that will happen.

Hmmmmm so good news but bad news. At least you can take a little time to get your head in order and decide what you want without having to worry about money. Happy relaxing and enjoy your lie-in tomorrow (y)

That's tough luck, I was made redundant in '95, it's no fun at all. Look on it as a beginning not an end.

Best of luck with your job search (y)

Been informed by Area manager we have to lose 15 hours a week off the staff rota. so either me and the manager will be working more than our contracted hours for no pay or we will have to be single manned. neither are possible imo.
I dont want to work for no pay for a company that couldnt give a s**t about me, and single manned is not possible as i keep getting more and more paperwork to do in less and less time, my office is miles away from tills and shop floor so cant be done

Sounds like you have the ultimate of jobs....! I wish the company I worked for was bothered about staff. My boss is bothered, but the company at large isnt! (not that the company is that important in that respect, its my boss who influences pay and conditions etc.).

Im hoping that I could be fairly well protected, Im the most cost effective member of my team (read most useful work on lowest salary), in a field thats necessary to maintaining the current business model, but the demand for business is going strange - airlines are folding, but the all-powerful ones that remain want new fuel efficient engines and super-light airframes. Oh well, I'll wait and see
