Technical Help Boot handle working but number plate lights aren’t.

I know that there are various posts but they seem to have a failed boot handle or wipers not working, however my wife’s car has all the above working just the number plate lights aren’t out. Have changed the bulbs with no luck and had a glance at the wiring in the elbow which seems fine. Is this likely to be the light/handle unit that needs replacing, as I took this apart and inside was full of wet mud and gunk. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If it's full of crap I reckon the first step would be to clean it out, dry it and check the continuity of the wiring to the lights. Most situations where the handle is replaced relate to issues with the microswitch as far as I recall - mine was swapped years ago for just that reason.

Bet yours didnt fail due to water or crap Bella! ive probably seen more rain here in the UK in the last week than you have all yer life mate!

Nah mate, my microswitch was just one of those that failed all by itself. The handle was replaced under warranty and then again a year later when the chrome started peeling off the underside of the new one.

BTW, I'm a pom too, born in Farnborough Hants, so I know a little about rain - albeit from a long time ago...
