Just curious, what does the gearbox do when switched off?
Does the gearstick have any impact?

There will be occasions when one might need to run the engine without going anywhere, such as during services or suchlike; revving up the motor with the car in gear and held only by the handbrake, or even the brake pedal, would be unwise.
