Technical Gutted!

Gutted!- Just had the sons punto MOT'd and failed! Both front ball joints and a shocker, not too bad and can do myself BUT it also failed on both rear inner arches being rotten, Common? I have just spent all weekend doing the headgasket and sorting gear cables, so a bit pi**ed off as you can imagine. Has anyone welded the arches up before- i can weld a bit and got me own mig, or do i cut my losses and get shot, its only done 66k on a V plate....... thoughts please

Bottom ball jpints get a pounding so there easy to replace now

The shock is also wear and tear

The rear archs often rot around the filler neck as it holds all the road crap around up near the mount and body but its not a common thing ita usually the floor


V 1999 / 2000 so its 14/15 years old
Rot will be setting in so your call

its getting very common unfortunately

probably best to scrap if its bad as seat belt anchorages and strength of car will be seriously weakened

get someone with welding abilitys to have a look at it,

if cheap enought get it welded up and get 12mths use out of punto before it is binned, if youve done the h/g and all that its just a waste other wise,

as you have the kit and ability I agree with Oldhammer fix it and get another year out of it

Out of interest, why are inner arches a fail?

I guess the mot manual says 30cm within a structural point or something similar...?

or buy another punto with nice clean shell,
plenty of them turn up on gumtree for peanuts with failed engine,

easy to swap these lumps over,

we recently picked up 03 reg punto sport Tax and tested 300 notes it only needed De-chav'ing.

I'd assess it carefully. I'm no lover of the Mk2, but for a weekend's relatively easy work with a MIG you could have a perfectly fine car.

Mk1 is good if you can find a good one,

alot of them are expired now and shouidnt be on the road,

isee a few on the road still with Slanty back wheels,
