Hi, I am Keith Walker from the USA, and I have an unusual Tipo project.

I will be putting a 2.0 Tipo 16v engine into a Lancia Scorpion (Montecarlo)!

The whole story on how I got the engine is interesting in and of itself. At the time in the 1990's Ferrari was the only Italian auto maker who still sold cars in the USA.

Since USA emissions at the time were so stringent, Ferrari's emissions lab (in Michigan) would test not only Ferrari engines for the US market, but also Ferrari, Alfa and FIAT/Lancia engines for euro markets as well.

The Tipo 2.0 16v was sent over for testing (with different cams), and like all engines sent over, it was a waste of money to send them back, so they accumulated in their warehouse.

When the Ferrari emissions lab closed, they had a big auction and some luckers got engines with very little wear on them. As we say in the US, 'they fell off the back of the truck'!

I purchased the Tipo engine second hand from another Lancia enthusiast and have been holding on to it for about 8 years.

It has been extremely hard to get parts for it, but in the years gone by, I was able to purchase the engine and battery wiring looms and the ECU. I also managed to purchase many of the electrical components. Many of the fuel injection/emission parts were on the engine, but many were modified for emissions testing purposes.

I am waiting on a FIAT Coupe 16vt transmission to be delivered from the UK, and should be ready to start the installation in the next year.

I will be posting photos as I can and asking questions about details about the engine, I look forward to getting to know some members and seeing the mods done!

Some of the simple questions:

  • What is the standard fuel pressure for the 2.0 16v?
  • The water pump has a certain bolt flange diameter, but when I purchased the pulley, it was another diameter. Anyone have the proper part nos. for matching sets?
Oh, I have a microfiche on the Tipo, but was hoping that someone has an online version link. Any assistance is appreciated!

Hi Keith,

Interesting background on the Sedici engine you've got there.

The Tipo forum is a bit quiet these days with the Tipo being quite an old and rare car on Britain's roads. Still a good few knowledgable users here though.

Looking at the 16V parts slides I see that the water pump to pulley interface is a flange with 3 bolts securing the pulley to the pump shaft flange.

Is this what you have?

If so then I believe the pulley is P/N:7641892 costing around £45 (UK pounds in May 2010) and it weighs 460 grams.

Why don't you kave a look on ePER on this website (see menu bar a top of page, 5th along).

Thanks for the Eper link! I have that software in an older version on CD, works kind of clunky, the online version is a bit better.

Regarding the water pump, to clarify, the engine came with a water pump on it. The bolt diameter was smaller than the pulley bolt diameter. I purchased the pulley a while ago, will have to check the part no. and report back.

I will have questions of components from time to time since I never had a Tipo, mostly which function a certain connector is associated with.

I recall one of the questions I had was that there were a few connectors on the thermostat that had me confused.

Appreciate the help!

Post up a pic Keith and we'll try to help. I have the thermostat in a very basic config but its not so hard to figure out when I look at it (my car is many miles from me hence why a pic of your version is useful)

The pulley I purchased was part no. 7701502. It doesn't fit the water pump on the engine (engine didn't have the pulley when I received it), but I will probably purchase a new water pump anyway.

A little confused on which Tipo model to search under in the ePer catalog. Can someone help out? Is 'MP Tipo Sport 16v IE' correct for the 2.0 16v???

Will post the block number later...

Thanks

Thanks, my pulley that is too big is 3 bolt, and 65mm from hole to hole, about 40mm to center to bolt line.

Maddogmorg, do you know of the part number for your pulley, I think that one would fit.

Thanks

first of all, congrats on a beautiful montecarlo...

there ere 2 versions of tipos with that engine. i think the engine it self is basically the same, only electronics were different. mk1 (145 bhp) was produced from '91 - '93, and mk2 (139 bhp) from 93 - 95. the same engine was used in fiat croma, lancia delta nouva, fiat coupe... it was also used (with an exception of beeing t/charged) in delta integrale, alfa 155 q4, fiat coupe turbo... so u should look up if u can use some of the parts if u can find those cars/engines/parts easier. here is a little something about taht angine, hope it hepls...

ps - please post some pics of lancia ;)

Hi Keith

I'm not sure how far through your conversion you are and or how much you know about the 16V engine. But my first thought was how your conversion could be done a lot easier if your goal is to have a 2L 16V. Transplanting the whole engine with a FWD trans requires a whole loe of modifications but swapping the 16V head to your original 2L block would be straight forward. You can effectively swap everything over minus the block and crank and oiling system.

Steve, I appreciate the concern, but all the ancillaries that come with the block and the fact that I have a viscodrive transmission with center shaft mean that I am better off putting the 16v head and block in.

I have plans for the old 8v block anyway!
