Technical grande punto 1.9 sporting diesel electrical problem

Hello from a newbie, my 2006 sporting diesel failed to start today, symptoms are, turn ignition on, loads of lights come on one the dashboard, and warnings about check power steering, and abs inactive ebd inactive, and lots of other messages etc, battery is fine , have bypassed the earth lead with a jump lead, direct to engine, still the same, i am a mechanic, so have checked all the obvious things,when i turn the key to the start position, nothing happens at all,left battery disconnected today, came home, and after leaving the ignition on for about 5 mins, it started just as it usually does. any ideas please

Have you checked the alternator?

What goes wrong with the alternator, to give this fault? thanks

They can sometimes fail. Check it, and if it's not charging the battery, it'll need replacing.
