Panda (Classic) Godiva -- the blue 750L (L is for "Low mileage")

Introduction

PIPPIN -- the blue 750L (L is for "Low mileage")

Well, having not "driven stick" for many, many years, picking up Pippin (the Panda formerly known as Godiva...) was one heckuvanadventure...!

It was fun, though! And I got him/her up to an indicated 70 mph, at one stage; but s/he cruises rather nicely between 60 and 65 mph. (It's a good job s/he doesn't have a rev counter...!) S/he also drove really well in heavy traffic in town... (it's the Shakespeare Birthday Weekend, here; and really sunny...). :D

Here s/he is, parked outside Black Cat Motors, in Stratford-upon-Avon: waiting to be MOT'd, serviced, and given a thorough once-over. (And I make no apologies for promoting them as a garage: they deliver sterling service -- which includes taking their customers all the way to pick up their new cars...! A big thank-you to John, the owner, therefore, for whizzing me up the A46 in his swish 4.2 Audi A8, earlier...! And for commenting that "It doesn't look like a twenty-three-year-old car, does it?") (y)

Thanks to everyone for their help and support -- especially to purple haze for bringing him/her to my attention...! :worship:

Watch this space...!

PS: Not a bad way to celebrate my 1,500th post to the Forum, eh...?!

How Pippin looks now -- after a light fettling from VmanC... :slayer:

Re: Raindrops keep rollin'

I am on another planet Ahhhh

"Captain's log, stardate 5371.3. A huge cosmic cloud has been reported moving into the outer fringe of our galaxy. Nothing like it has ever been seen before. Starfleet Command has sent the USS Fizzle to investigate, as we are the only vessel in the vicinity of the phenomenon. Our present position is in the Panda 14 system, which contains Scampilles, the most remote inhabited planet in the entire Federation."

I read that entirely in William Shatner's voice in my head :slayer:

Sometimes, it's the little jobs that are the most satisfying... -- carried out in a couple of minutes: between a bowl of soup and a large coffee (not to mention in between the heavy rain showers... -- although the sun is out, now that I've come indoors, of course...). :D

Ever since I had to remove the offside front indicator, in a lay-by, to remove bits of pigeon, on Sunday, it's been annoying me that the bottom screw on that side had lost its plastic top (and therefore had to be taken off with pliers, once the lens had been removed...). It turned out, today, that the same was beginning to happen to the nearside lamp, as well. From what Palio has said, this is not uncommon.... :(

Just look at the difference in colour...! (I replaced all four, by the way....) The car may have only done 25,000 miles; but 23 years of sunlight have played havoc with the condition of the plastic....

Now, at least, the screw heads match the lenses; and the offside indicator doesn't wobble around.... Here's to the next 23 years...! (y)

Nice touch with the new screws (y) I want some now!
Amber lenses look great with the blue paintwork. I'm a bit of a traditionalist with certain cars (like your 750) but I took the ambers off my 1995 Colour as I preferred the clear ones on it. Amber's kept though so can be put back to original for shows etc (if I ever get to any :bang:) and panda camp :Do

I think the Amber lenses look better on all Panda's except red. Clashes with red Panda's IMO.

Putting the spark back into Pippin

A late-night rumination... -- but I've been pondering the wisdom of changing Pippin's plugs and leads. Although he's running well -- and VmanC's recent distributor-tweaking worked wonders -- we're both still agreed that there's a slight, almost indefinable, hesitancy, somewhere....

I therefore wondered if anyone, from experience, had any recommendations as to brands/types of leads and plugs, etc.... -- presuming that the gap size is detailed in Porter/Haynes. (Now, all I have to do, is remember where I left my feeler gauge....)

Thank you...! (y)

Plugs should be preset, so leave the feeler gauges where they are, and I tend to use the cheapest HT leads from my motor factors without issue :)

The issue might not be ignition related... I recently changed the fuel pump on the CLX and it's clear now that it had not been performing 100% for a while even before it failed. The car is better than it had been for a long time with the new pump. The chances are the pump is nothing to do with your hesitancy but the problem could be hard to find!

I've tried various differnt plugs over the years but stick with NGK bog standard now. Very cheap and as good as anything.

I know....

I'll see if changing the plugs and leads over does anything; and then -- when I collect Betty -- leave it in VmanC's more-than-capable mitts. As with all these things, I'm hoping that if I start with the most obvious, and not-too-expensive, ideas, then, maybe, just maybe, I'll solve the problem; or at least eradicate something....

The real reason I'm starting with the plugs and leads, though, is that one of the leads was already slightly damaged (or just aged... -- and has been replaced with a second-hand one...); and I'm going with Vernon's instinct (whilst trying not to put words in his mouth...) that the problem is ignition-related....

Ta...! (y)

Nice that someone has done all the hard work for me.... ;)

Well if that's Vernon's instinct then it's a good reason to start there!

Poor, powdery Pippin...

Well, apropos of b*gg*r all, really: two things have been bothering me about Pippin's interior: (1) the tatty parcel shelf; and (2) a mysterious, very fine yellowy-orange powder (not obviously metallic) that was lightly coating the rear footwells, before I gave him a good vacuuming (ahead of totally stripping the interior out, at some unspecified point in the future...).

Reading all the (very old) threads, on here, it's apparent that a replacement, clip-on parcel shelf is unlikely to materialize (even from a Kentwards-direction...): so I did wonder (although I was sure what the answer was going to be...) if it would be possible to fit a 'standard', non-hammock-type (SNHT) shelf, as replacement. Obviously, it isn't... -- although I had to rely on my fading memory: as Betty is currently many miles away, in Vernonland.. -- as there is nowhere for the hinges to attach to. [Thank you, Forum members, for all your interior shots! And to ePER.] But, taking off one of the shelf supports, I did find that there is a (currently covered) hole in the metalwork, ready to take the (semi) captive nut that would hold a SNHT support....

So, where am I going with all this...?

Well, having taken out the back seat, to get easier access to everything (I even took the rear trim panel and seat-belt off, on one side, just to see what's what...), I discovered the source of the mysterious, floaty powder. It's coming from Pippin's stuffing -- i.e. the padding in the rear hammock seat. :(

I therefore have a trio of questions for all other hammock-seated-Panda owners. How long does the seating foam last...? How difficult is it to replace...? And, finally, if the worst happens, having found the relevant hole for the SNHT shelf support, would it be possible (although sacrilegious) to replace the current seating with that from a better model... (along with a new parcel shelf...)?

That would obviously be a last resort: and I'd rather the (not the most comfortable) back seat was re-stuffed, if necessary. I'm really just exploring the options; and learning more about how Pandas are put together....

PS: How different are the shelves in Marbellas, Mk1 Pandas and the 750L...?
