Panda (Classic) FOU

Red Panda 4x4 1988
I'm very fond of the original Panda's as I grew up around them, I remember a time when a really clean one with decent amount of MOT & tax (the good old days of the tax disc) could be had for less than £100, it's a shame there's hardly any left here in the UK now due to rust & the scrappage scheme, to me the 141 models are the best Panda as they could do so much more than other cars & even huge 4x4's couldn't even do, the later 169's are really decent little cars but no Panda beats the original especially with the omega rear end from 1986 on which came from the Lancia Y10, this one looks very clean

I am the previous owner of this one (I didn't feel I had a need or time for two pandas) and I will say that what you're describing for the UK is very true for sweden aswell. Especially the 4x4s as they were only available from one dealership one year (1988). This means that the 4x4 only sold somewhere around 100 units in Sweden.
The panda isn't really designed for a swedish context, with quite long distances between towns and cities. It's not like in Italy where you can just pop from one town to another in a jiffy.
Anyway, I agree that every scrapped panda is a sad waste.

The Panda has driven 146195 kilometers. It's not super low but pretty good for a car of this age. I'll try to drive as little as possible with the car in winter. But of course I will test it in the snow. It has some rust here and there in the usual places. I just smeared every rusty area with owatrol oil so nothing wil get worse until those part will be welded. The interior is also in good shape. I will get new foam for the chairs and I will need an ashtray asap!!

It’s in great condition for 36 years old. There seems to be an increase in value of these cars particularly the 4x4 recently, but very few actually left still running. According to the website “How Many Left” there were 1,820 4x4 Sisleys in 1995, 450 in 2003, & 33 on the road in 2024 with another 136 SORN or off the road. They are disappearing!
I expect in Sweden as so few were sold you can count them in single figures?

Looks in very good condition, is it low kms? How do you find it in Swedish winters?
I've been driving my camel trophy one every winter since 2015 and it's a really excellent winter car. When it's slippery and you feel that you're starting to slide you just pull the 4x4 lever and it straightens right up. Really easy to control sideways aswell. Unfortunately the salt take it's toll on the steel but honestly not as bad as could be expected. With that said I have replaced the sills on both sides little by little and the plan is to not drive it in the wintertime anymore.

Do you have a picture of your camel trophy panda?
Rust is the main issue unfortunately, I have filled everywhere possible with Waxoil which seems to stop the rust. I did the same 40 years ago on my 1967 Austin Healey Sprite and although I no longer own it, it is still alive!

Yeah sure. I'll attach a winter picture.
Like I said I've had to weld the sils quite a bit. Now I have some holes in the floor of the boot and some rust in the left front corner behind the front wheel. And also quite bad lower edge of the doors. That why I hopefully won't drive it in the winter anymore.

You could put owatrol in all the exposed metal parts. It will stop things from rusting. There are also spray cans with special nozzles to spray the hollow areas. You can get it on Amazon.
