Hi everybody,
as from the object of this thread I'm looking for a Fiat Ducato 1989 TD 2.5 cc 2WD 5 speed gearbox. I've broken down in the middle of Spain and I'm having a very difficult time to find the piece which seems to not exist online. The closest version I could find seems to match all the technical info (aside from the engine code) despite it being for a Diesel engine and not Turbo Diesel (https://www.autodemolizionepollini.it/it/ricambi-usati-codice-9558677980). Does anybody knows if I can fit a Diesel gearbox on a Turbodiesel engine? Is it going to allow me to at least drive softly to Barcelona harbour in order to take the camper back to Italy at some point?
I've read another thread (https://www.fiatforum.com/threads/change-ducato-2-5-engine-gearbox-for-later-model.473711/) in which the reccomendation seemed to be not to mix one CC for another as well as not mixing Petrol with Diesel, but in terms of Diesel or TurboDiesel it sounds like they can be compatible.

I attach the car document and the piece I found online. If you need any other info or technical detail I can provide everything

Thanks a lot in advanceFrancesco

If they are both 2.5 or even 2.8 Sofim turbo or non turbo It should fit the engine to bellhousing so well worth a try.
I cannot say regarding drive shaft sizes or gearing etc. But given the age you are probably lucky to find even that.
Incidentally Citroen and Peugeot used that engine in their big vans, Iveco did, but they are Rear Wheel Drive so no good for you.:(

@bugsymike I really appreciate your take on the matter Mike. Thanks a lot! In the end I confronted remotely my mechanic in Italy and soon after the spanish mechanic before buying the piece. They both agreed with you saying that Diesel and Turbo Diesel should share the same gearbox and eventually this seem to be our best option at this very moment so we took it. In one week the part should arrive, fingers crossed!

@barbieridsgn Let me know how you get on as I am looking for a 2.5 TD gearbox for my 1992, I currently have a 2.5D, I think the gear ratios are diffrenent but the box should fit.
Maybe also the 2.8 to widen your search area?
If only the gearing to high, it may be worth trying slightly lower profile tyres to reduce the difference.

I think the 2.8 is different driveshafts, I think the gearbox design changed in 1994 before the 2.8 came out, but I'm no expect and would like to be proven wrong

You may be right, I only had one Ducato 2.8 and several Iveco Daily's (rwd) although worked on many Citroen/Peugeot and Fiat versions, the Ducato was a 1997 Maxi 122hp version so heavy duty anyway but many years ago now.:)
