Hello all,

My partners fiat was leaking from between the bellhousing and the engine block, clutch was slipping and she said weird noise from gearbox.
Had a peak through the inspection port on the BH and looked grimey and oily, took the gearbox out to assess the damage. Also bought a new clutch to throw in whilst im down there.

Took the box out and noticed the rear main seal leaking and also a leak from the transmission input seal.

Opened the gear box up and the input shaft bearing has failed. The moment the box split apart the ball bearings fell out to the bottom of the case which pissed me off.
Aside from the obvious bearing issue and the seal infront of it im wondering has any damage been done to the gears inside the box. I believe we noticed the problem quite early on and there was still a fair amount of trans fluid in the box when I drained it.

Anyone with some gearbox experience can you give your thoughts on this based off the video and image? (note some of the dots and spots that look like chips or damage is just oil sitting in a weird way, i dipped my finger on a few to check if it was chips or metal shavings but seemed alright)

Cheers in advance

I bought an 05 1.9 Doblo with "clutch fault" as soon as I drove it onto trailer I knew it was more. Like you first motion shaft bearing shot, on mine it had moved around so much that the drive to reverse gear and others was badly damaged. I was lucky and picked up a good s/h box as original to badly damaged.
In your case hopefully you caught it early, the main thing is not to leave any hardened steel debris inside the box to mangle around the gears.
I understand there are better bearings available , but I don't know the details.

Hopefully all is alright, cant see any visable damage so far but I've not seperated the shafts so hard to tell, bit out of my depth.
If all is good ill be sure to thoroughly flush all the fluid out and wash it in fresh oil
