My jtd starts and ticks over fine, but as soon as she`s put under load she chugs like she`s running out of fuel, 20mph would be a miracle, and everyone behind me is engulfed in clouds of grey/black smoke, this only happenned this morning and went from running perfectly to this with no warning whatsoever.

Any ideas

has it been serviced recently ?

Could be anything from blown head gasket to water in the diesel filter.

Has the coolent level gone down?

She was serviced 5000 miles ago and the coolent level is stable, the only thing we had done recently is replacement gearbox.
I haven`t got a lot more information, as i say, clouds of black/grey smoke, had to nurse her home at 20mph, hoping i didn`t see a policeman.
She starts, ticks over and sounds normal but is undriveable, and there are no warning lights/buzzers so i`m kind of hoping it`s not too serious
Too much fuel and not enough air ???

Have had a problem on a few Multiplas with the modified throttle valve solenoid sticking. This valve is in the inlet manifold and basically blocks the air inlet and can cause a similar problem to yours. Just check the valve is open before you try anything costly.

Thanks for all your replies, it was indeed a pipe, don`t know which one but it had a cable tie rather than a jubilee clip, so i`m 76 quid poorer but i do have a nice new shiny jubilee clip to show for it

£76 for a pipe or was this for labour?

Is it a stainless jubilee clip? any pictures of it,pref before & after fitting?;)

Was it the clip on the intercooler, only I have seen cable ties used on these?
