I'm going to be changing the timing belt, water pump and tensioner pulley on my 1.2 litre 8 valve non VVT Grande Punto in a couple of weeks. The belt is currently at 100,000 miles and the pump is leaking.

So I'm collecting information at the moment. I found a guide on FF, but it looks overly complex. I can't find a YouTube video that seems to cover it well. I have the Fiat e-learn for the timing belt but when I tried to save the document my PC crashed...

Can anybody share the best resource to do this?

What's so "hard" about the forum Guide (+ Discussion section) and the eLearn procedure?
Especially if there is no VVT in 1,2 8V Grande (Evo/2012 has it, because of Euro_4 transition to E_5 emissions).

No, you don't have same engine as "500" above (YouTube).
Your 1,2 8V is more like Punto_2_FL.

This is the guide. In comparison the video above looks a lot simpler although it is a different engine.

Hi Anthony,

Lads Punto Evo active feelin good, 2010 1.2 8 valve.

Get the camshaft/crankshaft locking kit.

Get a cam cover gasket with all the o rings needed for cam oilways.

The oil pressure controled version has a solenoid to control oil pressure to the cam belt pulley, but yours doesn't have variable valve timing. Your has the solid cam pulley ??

With the proper cam/crank locking kit, it's a straight forward and easy job.

Just follow the cam belt instructions TO THE LETTER, and all will be good.

Take your time, check, check and check again.

From memory, some convienient "bits of wood" may be needed to keep the cam belt in place on crank pulley whilst you route the belt.

Have some tipex to hand, for your reassurance.

I would imagine the water pipe *taps out* with a suitable size drift and hammer. Lub to refit me thinks....

Whilst the cam cover is off, and before cam belt removed, check and record valve working clearances...don't have clearance measurement to hand, so find out. Use 'go, no go' technique....the measurement may be 0.3mm plus or minus 0.05mm, for example. So get feelers to use, ie. O.36mm, 0.3mm and 0.25mm.....

Over 0.36, toooo loose. 0.3 lovely, 0.25 too tight.

You are aware shims are needed, which with the special tool, can be replaced without having to remove cam shaft.

Be aware oil ruines cam belts. ANY SIGN of oil drip out of bottom of cam cover ???

Will take photos hopefully before the storm hits.

Off to town on next bus for threaded rod, nuts and washers etc. just in case rear hubs don't want to come of stub axles, rear sub frame removal.

They are relatively cheap at £10 delivered, so i'll be getting one.

Can't say i'm that keen to take the cover off.

It is the solid type non VVT, so theoretically i could set the timing deliberately wrong and the worst that i'd happen is that it wouldn't start, although i won't be trying this! Deliberately anyway :)

I may have to muddle through somewhat, will see.

I dripped some tippex on my oily car jumper, theres still some left though.

I saw some shims at Stermat of all places, i didn't buy them because i had no need at the time.

Its dry as a bone, no oil there.

I gather it was only going to be bad in Scotland, will see!

Post some pictures, would be good to see the job as it happens. The bushes on these puntos are always shot, but never fail completly leaving the rear suspension feeling quite heavy.

This is the elearn, not sure what to think of it, what can i not do?

mmm.

Before buying shims, you need to know exactly the sizes you need.
And if you do clearances, you put new valves stem seals.
You could do that....
Bit trickier with head on, though. But if you want to, you can do it.

£10 for the locking kit, how many pieces are in the box, the cam lock, the crank lock and the special pliers, and thing else ?

Job can be done without locking kit meaning cam cover stays on, but this is your first one, your first time, a cam belt *virgin*....so do it properly ffs. You will not have the confidence to do it *lid on*, besides how you gunna check valve working clearance etc.......

With cam cover off, ideal time to clean down cam box area and lid, including those crucial oil ways etc......cleaning down cam area also aids cleaning), flushing sump floor.

Examine what comes out/drains out of sump.

For comfort I raised the cars front and used the modified nissan ( Datsun ) scisser jack to support the engine .

Stermat sells auto shims ?

Which branch please ?

Get some tipex, you know why.

I did the lads Punto cam belt at 60k I think it was. Now 123k and 5/6 years ago, so change time very soon.....rear axle change first though.

Bus here in ten mins.....back later.
