Hiya, my fiat grande Punto 2007 make, 70k is making rattling noise for a while. Comes from somewhere at front.
Noise (attached) is only there when car is moving (no noise when engine is idling). It gets slightly louder /more frequent rattle when car accelerates, but the noise is still clear when going downhill (with no gas). It goes away when I press the clutch all the way down. Went to 2 garages, one said it's the gearbox (said clutch is fine) and other said its a broken flywheel (perhaps) and gears seem fine. First garage took it up to ramp to check.
Problem is both gears and clutch seem fine to when I use them ( no noise or problem when changing gears or pressing clutch down). Only thing is I've never changed gear oil ever, but both garages said it's pointless to change gear oil.
Any advice please, what can be causing the noise?
I understand Gearbox repair is pretty expensive (1k) especially compared to value of car. So if it is the gearbox, it might not be worth getting if fixed. Any help or advice to understand the noise will be much appreciated.

Sounds like a loose wheel!!!!! It needs immediate investigation to check for wheel wheel hub / bearings and caliper fixings. Check all 4 wheels.

Could be a broken spring thogh spring ends tend to sound more sharp metallic. Also checl air com condenser adn radiator are secure.
Also could be the gearbox output shaft bearing. If so it requires a gearvox removal but may be repairable for the cost of a bearing. Most times if a gearbox is taken apart people recondition / overhaul them at the same time due to the labour cost / time involved. I had a Citroen with similar sounds and it ran for years. Check of course the gearbox still has oil in it and that it has not had a major leak.

Thank you. The wheels were checked by first garage but they couldn't find anything. If it is the gearbox output shaft bearing, would I not see any problems when changing gears?
