Auto express I think it was did say Fiat definately had plans for the 595SS- 200bhp engine- designed by a ex-Ferrari F1 engineer.
It was Auto Express, but they're not the most relieable source in the world. They claim the 200 bhp Abarth will still use the 1.4 Turbo engine.
A 1.4 with 200 bhp works out to around 142 bhp per litre. Let's compare that to a few production cars:
VW Golf GTI - 2.0 - 200 bhp = 100 bhp/litre
Fiat (Various) - 1.4T - 150 bhp = 107 bhp/litre
MINI cooper S - 1.6 - 175 bhp = 109 bhp/litre
Fiat coupe - 2.0 - 220 bhp = 110 bhp/litre
Vaxhall Corsa - 1.6 - 198 bhp = 123 bhp/litre
Bugatti Veyron 8.0 - 1000 bhp = 125 bhp/litre
MINI Cooper S Works - 1.6 - 212 bhp (est) = 133 bhp/litre
Audi S3 - 2.0 - 265 bhp = 133 bhp/litre
911 T - 3.6 - 480 bhp = 133 bhp/litre
911 GT2 - 3.6 - 530 bhp = 147 bhp/litre
Evo 9 - 2.0 - 300 bhp = 150 bhp/litre
There's a wide range of cars there. All Turbocharged. Some expensive and some cheap. Most of them don't even come close to 142 bhp/litre.
The Evo has better figures, but they need frequently servicing and the fuel economy is poor. The 911 GT2 is £130k and has some very trick turbo's!
I think the most we will officially see out of Fiat's 1.4 turbo engine is the rumoured 180 bhp for the Grande Punto Abarth.
From Fiat, we might see 200 bhp in a race/rally car, otherwise it'll be up to the aftermarket tuners.
You make a good point, but Fiat have been working very hard lately on developing new, innovative engines- such as the 2 cylinder 550c turbo that whips out a amazing 100hp.
I wouldn't be surprised to see them pull something out of nowhere to create a 200hp beast.. but time will tell.
Fiats 2 cylinder "Multiair" engine is going to be 900cc and will offer between 90 and 110 bhp. It's a very advanced motor, using electro-hydraulic valves and won't be available until 2009. Even so, the bhp per litre is only 122.
Time will tell and I guess I'll be eating my words if I'm wrong.

I'm sure it would be easy to get 200bhp from the 1.4 T-Jet with a simple mapping session

I don't think it would be EASY to reach 200 bhp with just a remap. It might be achieveable, but I think you would probably need a new exhaust and air box.
Here's what Superchips manage to get out of modern turbo'd petrol engines:
Focus ST - 225 bhp + 50 bhp = 110 bhp/litre
Punto GT - 130 bhp + 30 bhp = 114 bhp/litre (It's the only 1.4T I could find)
Golf GTI - 197 bhp + 41 bhp = 119 bhp/litre
Focus RS - 215 bhp + 25 bhp = 120 bhp/litre
Astra VXR - 236 bhp + 43 bhp = 139 bhp/litre
Corsa VXR - 189 bhp + 35 bhp = 140 bhp/litre
The Corsa VXR comes very close to the 142.85 bhp/litre that we would need to achieve 200 bhp from our 1.4T.
Over on vxronline.co.uk the Thorney Motorsport car is getting a peak of 220 bhp (137.5 bhp/litre) and Regal are claiming 230 bhp (143.75 bhp/litre). Both of these cars would have been running on 98+ Ron petrol, so for Fiat to produce a standard 200 bhp 1.4T is very unlikely IMO.
However, a remap, exhast and air box should do the trick. Then you'll need to think about improving traction, braking and whether the gearbox can handle the torque!

Superchips arent as good as Unichips or any custom mapped chip for your car.
Custom mapped chip, your looking at *about* 25% extra power. Thats what dastek claim and others.
Superchips are more like 15-20% MAX. I can only talk from fiat coupe experience, but the best chip for stnd coupes is the squadra or gtech.
Squadra is 40bhp gain and gtech is 30bhp gain. Nuthing else but the chip.
Gtech is based on a superchip and hence thats the kinda gains.
Bear in mind the 1.4t they are thinking of will be based on the 100bhp engine and when ya bolt a turbo on it works out about 50% extra power.
20v n/a - 155 bhp
20v tub - 220 bhp
So a 1.4t would probably be around 150bhp stnd. To get that to 200bhp would be remap (25bhp say) and then exhaust, filter (15bhp) then possibly fmic to help with cooling(10bhp). Thats the probable outcome of getting 200bhp. However, would the stnd internals be good for that or any more? Who knows.

I'm on a fairly sharp learning curve here so help me out guys, please? How can a 200 bhp front wheel drive light weight car maintain traction? I'm not saying it doesn't; just can't figure out how the things not in a permanent front wheel drift.

Just remember. Its not unheard of to get 200hp or even more from an mk1 uno turbo 1.3. Im sure fiat could manage to get 200hp from a modern, more reliable engine and turbo system of the same capacity.
TBH going by fiats cars in the past and more recent, i cant see it being much more than 150hp. Fiat do small town cars, not mental hot hatches. The only fast car fiat have ever produced in recent times is the Fiat Coupe.

There's two Abarth articles in this months evo magazine. The first is on the 500 Abarth which they say will have 135 bhp and a "Range topping 150 bhp version expected to be called the Abarth 500SS".
They say on the rumoured 200 bhp version: "Our contacts in Italy expect this amount of power will only be available to the racing version of the 500 Abarth that's being readied for a one-make race series."
The second article is about the re-launch of the Abarth brand and states the GP Abarth will have 153 bhp and 178 bhp versions.

500 Abarth at the moment will be a 150 T-jet but if all goes to plan there will be a 30 bhp upgrade for the car as an optional package from Fiat. Also it won't be coming to the UK until at least July September 08 (Italy takes a holiday in August) and it may be in LHD form only. Abarth versions will be very limited as well, possibly 500 LE edition Abarth's for the UK in the first year.
