Re: Koniki - Fiat Ducato engine problem

Hi guy's,

Im new to the site. And this is my first post. Any one know of

any problems relating tha 2.8 Ltr fiat ducato engine & gearbox in the motor

home : Swift Kontiki 640. I have W Reg 2000 with just short of 40,000

miles on the the clock. Some comments have been made about the gears

jumping out of Fifth gear & some damage to the sincromesh. Can any one

tell me is this just in one or two isolated cases. or is it somthing they are

renowned for (NO DISRESPECT) or is it down to bad driving.

Any help that any one give me on this subject would most

helpfull

Regards sussextrotter

P. S. Looks like a great site, Glad to be part of it. Chears Guy's

***Note to mods - this should be a new thread I think?***

I had great trouble with a Citroen of 94 vintage but, as I understand it, all models of the Peugeot/Citroen/Fiat Ducato type used the same Citoren made gearbox. The problem was supposedly caused by water creeping in to the box and contaminating the oil leading to knackered synchros. After two rebuilds, however, it was discovered that the originally Citroen synchro rings continued to fail (crack) whilst replacements manufactured elsewhere have been ok.

Hi Like you I have a 2002 Rapido 22ft Motor home with the 2.8 JTD engine with only 18000 miles on the clock. Last year the gearbox developed an audible rattle, largely on the overrun. I had the box rebuilt and a new clutch fitted but it still had a slight rattle. We were on our way to Italy last week but only got as far as Dover ( fortunatley ) When coming off the motorway the gearbox seemed to have let loose a bag of nails which although still operative was very noisy. The noise went away when the clutch was deperessed. We returned home on a low loader ( thank heavens for recovery insurance ) the next day to have it fixed by the garage which had arranged the specialist rebuild only 200 miles before. They put in some more shims which got rid of the main noise but still left a rattle when in neutral which still went away when the clutch was depressed. Eventually I gave them a copy of the article in the March 2007 copy of MMM magazine page 232 which discussed a possible common problem in some gearboxes and the 5th gear. They replaced the 5th gear and the vehicle drives well and the gearbox seems fine but I still have the slight rattle in neutral unless the clutch is depressed. It does therefore appear there may be a common fault but nobody seems quite sure why? I bought the van at 14000 miles so it may be that the driving habits of the previous owner were not good. It would be nice to have Fiats view on the problem and its recification. Hope that helps.

It sounds like a Thrust bearing on your cluch plate

Can any one tell me how 2 ltrs of water got into my gearbox. I have a 1998 2.5 TD Ducatto campervan. Has any one had this problem before ?:bang:

I also would say thrust baring!
you can tell by bepressing the cluch and releasing at different speeds. it will go away for one of them, but come back in a matter of minuets!
cheers
