Panda (Classic) Engelbert the H reg Dark Green Sisley Progress Log

Introduction

https://www.fiatforum.com/panda-cla...ng-h-reg-sisley-needs-home-5.html#post3514984

So today I took delivery of the above mentioned Sisley, who I have decided to name Engelbert after the last 3 letters of his numberplate (I always name my cars in this way). All is explained as to how he came to be in my possession from the above thread so I wont touch on that too much here but will say the seller is a very kind lady. She was understanding about the transport frustrations I had and was very honest about the condition of the car.

This first post is going to be very pic heavy by the way!! I got it and did a quick assessment (I will do a more in depth assessment tomorrow) but I am extremely pleased with the condition generally, it obviously will need work but I am prepared for this (hence the project log). It has every sisley extra apart from the grille badge and is missing two centrecaps and the horn push (I am not counting the compass in this), though I wasnt expecting there to be as much of the sisley trim etc as there is! I am in the process of compiling a list of required items too.

Required Items/work required

Side repeater indicator
Front part of Airbox assembly (or new clips)
two sisley centrecaps
Front grille sisley badge
Instrument surround (See photo)
possibly bonnet vent (there is a small crack in this but I actually dont think it matters too much)
Possibly new bonnet or just work to the bonnet
Rubber headlamp rear cover
Rubber boot seal
Refurbish wheels and new tyres
Sisley Horn Push
New Battery
Aerial
Wiring repairs (wiring next to battery at least)
Repair front seat fabric
Under bonnet screwdriver
wirebrushing and undersealing, possible welding at points
Front bullbars
rear bullbars Palio I havent forgotten about this, but will wait till funds are more available if thats cool?
Obviously a stripdown and recommissioning generally of the engine is required as it hasnt run in 4-5 years

The general condition is pretty good indeed, though some rust curing and prevention will obviously have to be done. But I gave it a quick clean and it has come up very nicely, I am struggling for things to say about it as I have so much swimming in my head at the moment with it, im overwhelmed, need to sleep to digest it all! I will let the pictures and videos do the talking (still need to upload videos)
My Sisley looked like this when I took it off the road:

It was pretty much perfect when I bought it about 18 months before, so didn't take long for it to get that bad. Worth having a close look at the bonnet to see if there are any signs of it going on there aswell.

Yes my roof went from a tiny bit of bloom to needing a respray in a year. I reckon all the paint has been set to self destruct at 25 years old, as all the Sisley's seem to have gone recently!! Still I don't suppose Fiat were really expecting many to last that long..... :)

Crikey! Why do we think this happens to the Sisley specific paints??

The bonnet had started to do that, but the front of the bonnet has been repaired with filler and cracked etc and I'm not happy with it generally so I have removed it and will be replacing it.
Not just Sisley paints, any of the metallics. Clearcoat starts to go eventually. Flat colours don't have 2 layers to delaminate like that.

Oh jeez at this kind of timescale my parade only has about 2 years before this starts on it, hopefully the bonnet should escape the worst of it and the twin sunnies instead of flat roof should prevent it going bad.

Well, mine started about 5 years ago. Mind you it had spent a few years in Scotland, the harsher climate probably hurried things along. Good job yours isn't up ther........oh hang on:eek::devil:

Same with ,mine, but from what i can see above mine isn't that bad yet.

It all sounds more like pandemic Pandabola virus.

i would advise taht some good UV protection should slow it down, no direct sun and bird poo washed imediatelly.

Put the instrument surround back together today, had to drill a semi circle in the front part of the shroud to accommodate for the wire for the inclinometer. The heater doesnt seem to be working but I think this is to do with the heater box I changed over recently rather than the dash (I made it from two because the ebay one didn't have the heater controls). It remains to be seen if I can sort it, but looks like I might have to get another one and redo the job. There is a slight gap between the two parts but I am working on this.

I also did a video which I may or may not post on here depending on whether I remember to post it once uploaded or not, but in it I discuss what I am going to do with the sisley centrecaps, discuss the roofrack and paint and I plan to have the sisley wheels powdercoated.

Removed the front seats today, my mother in law has kindly agreed to repair them for me :) though the seatbelt connector on the drivers seat is loose so I will have to look into repairing that too.

Anyways I did a YouTube video on how to remove the front seats and rear seat from a fiat panda. I find visual guides useful so hopefully this will help someone in the future

Today's job was cutting up the remains of the roof rack and removing its brackets from the car, all of the tubing was very Rusty. I am having a new one made next year though as I've said before on here :)

So the plastic corners and metal brackets are being swapped with another forum member on Tuesday for him to make a new roofrack out of :) in return I am getting a parcel shelf for Engelbert so it all works out well :) I hate waste so the brackets and corners being used is great, and the metal went to the local recycling facility. All in all very pleased :)

Are there dedicated sisley parcell shelves? Never heard of, to make you feel better mate mine is exact same one.

I had heard that Sisley's came with "furry" black parcel shelves, though I could be wrong, I am sure that someone will have the correct info though!

I also think Sisley's came with the covers that go on the inside of the boot, the flat leather look panels, but mine doesn't have that.

This project is moving along, not as quickly as I would like, but I am enjoying the luxury of taking my time, learning more and enjoying the process rather than having to have it ready for my work on Monday.

Mine's definitely not furry - the parcel shelf that is!! It's also definitely the original one, and quite the worse for wear...... (y)

As I've spent the last day trying to find my misplaced Sisley keys (moved it yesterday morning & can I find them??!!! I have spares but am refusing to admit defeat by getting them out! :bang: ), I can't check inside the boot tonight. Let me know if you need info about that - you mean like the door cards? I can't remember but it sounds familiar! :)

Mine has a furry shelf, but so does Digger, perhaps an earlyish 4x4 thing? The tailgate trim is just a plain unpadded black one on both too. Certainly original on the Sisley. Interestinly the Mk1 has a padded one which seems wrong since that was a basic model!

Oh sorry, did you mean the cover inside the tailgate (covering the wiper?). It's a thick cardboard thing on my Sisley (they usually dissolve!). Some mk1's have nice padded leather ones (not leather clearly.....), though oddly Jasper & Casper have completely different ones (Casper had a nice padded one, Jasper doesn't) despite being the same age & model - typical Fiat!

Typical fiat then :ROFLMAO:

I'm not really too bothered about the tailgate cover at the moment, but the lack of parcel shelf was bugging me.

Slowly working down the to do list :)
