My daughter has a 2012 500 lounge which keeps showing check running lights, so we've checked all bulbs front and rear but what we've noticed is
Main beam works on drl
Headlights work
Drl work
But when we turn headlights on,drl go out, is this correct?
If so then we have no side lights
Why is the check running light coming on?

It's complicated; there are three lights in the DRL housing. The high (main) beam - a 55W H1 halogen bulb - and the dual-filament 21/5W DRL/sidelight bulb. Assuming the DRL's are selected 'ON' in the menu the DRL's will be on as long as the ignition is on and the headlights are off. Once the headlights are switched on the DRL filaments will go off and the 5W sidelights will illuminate. If the ignition is off and the light switch turned on the sidelights only will illuminate. 🙃

From the owner's handbook (found in the download section of the forum):

From the internet with the bulb symbol:

The bulb is small, the contacts are tiny wires, if the bulbs are not working correctly, I'd first check check if you've got the correct bulbs (W21/5W not W5W) and then if the contacts are strait / properly inserted. Looking at the photo I assume there are two contacts on the left: one in front, one in the back of the bulb base and two contacts on the right: one in front, one in the back.

Yes there are two filaments in one bulb and as I said
One does the drl
One does the high beam.......that's 2 right?
So what One does the side lights?

There are two bulbs in the DRL lamp.

The first bulb is a 55W H1 halogen bulb. This is the high beam.
  • It only comes on when the lights are set to High beam (or Flash).
  • When the high beams are "on", so is the blue light in the instrument console.

The second bulb is a dual filament 21W5 T5 bulb. This is the DRL/sidelight bulb.
  • The 21W filament is the DRL. It comes on whenever the ignition is on, as long as the "DRL On" is set in the menu and the lights are off.
  • The 5W filament is the sidelight. It comes on when the lights are on. The DRL filament goes out when the lights are on.
    • 5W filament also lights when the ignition is off and the lights are turned on (now it's acting as the parking-lights)

If your car's high beam comes on, the H1 bulb is fine.
If the DRLs come on, the 21W filament in the T5 bulb is fine.

If you turn the lights on, the DRL filament should go out, and the dimmer 5W filament should light up.
If the 5W filament does not come on, the filament is likely blown. You need a new T5 bulb.

The H1 is fitted in the Headlight and works on dipped beam only
The main beam comes on the drl unit( nice n bright) the drl works until I put the headlights on.
I must have a rogue 500!

1. The DRL bulb has two filaments inside the bulb.
2. The larger filament is the Daytime Running Light and is 21W.
3. The smaller filament is a side light and is 5W.
4. The lighting system will only light one filament at a time.
5. The DRL will only come on whilst the headlights are OFF.
6. The side light will only come on when the headlights are ON.
7. The other large bulb in the DRL UNIT is the main beam bulb.
Are you saying that yours are acting differently?
