I have a 1997 fiat ducato 2.5tdi 610 motorhome , had an oil leak from front left drive shaft gearbox , ordered new seal which stated it fitted my vehicle , then thought that might as well change drive shaft , again the item purchased was supposed to fit my van , took the old seal and shaft out then noticed the new seal was different , I thought an upgrade however was loose in the gearbox but fitted new shaft , put it all back together and found the shaft was not meshing in box , it is obviously the wrong shaft , the old shaft was taken for scrap so couldnt put that one back , why do these sites say parts will fit especially when they are given reg no to check . How do I get the right part when ordering , any help would be appreciated as I am losing the will to live

Hello,

On the bottom of the forum banner you've got the link to ePER, which is the FIAT spare parts catalogue. Search window is top left of the screen. You can browse by models and categories or search with the VIN number. However the VIN of your MH might not be recognised :(

On the main ePER screen there's a short instruction on how to use it :)

Thank you so much for your reply , I am 70 years old and not computer literate but will get someone who can hopefully do the things you suggested online for me . Give me a hammer and nails I can build a house but technology and computers are a foreign language to me .

I assume it will be this category:

However there are different variants - engine (even the 2,5 liter diesel has at least two of them), load capacity in quintals, on some of them there was a modification from a certain production date...

Without the VIN being recognized by ePER it will be hard to find the correct one. Unless one of the forum's specialists in this generation of Ducato will be able to guide you...

@bugsymike ?

Sorry no specific data on that era re drive shafts, I may have worked on them occasionally when they were a current van version , although most of my interest at the time was the Iveco Daily's which had a similar engine but the gearbox on those being rear wheel drive was of course different. I had a regular customer with the 1997 2.8 idt Ducato Maxi van which was the heavy duty version with 16 inch wheels and stronger suspension joints, drive shafts etc. that customer eventually acquired the 05 2.8 Citroen Relays which I worked on as well.
Re the Ops initial issue, unless a specific drive shaft problem I would have replaced the oil seal after confirming measurements with the old used part and the same if changing drive shafts matched the two together to be sure of a correct match for correct fitting, also sadly not ditched the old unit immediately. Often drive shaft faults were related to the outer CV joint which I would have replaced on it's own at a lower cost to the customer.
On the oil seal side if still causing a problem I would take the measurements and there are companies that will supply seals, bearings etc. on those details rather than trusting a third party supplier to hopefully provide the correct part.
Re the replacement shaft "not meshing with gearbox"? Can he confirm that the shaft is going in all the way up to the gearbox so looks as normal but not driving, say for instance if the shaft is to small on the splines or the shaft is not actually going all the way into the gearbox to locate on the splines, as this will maybe give more information. It may be possible his is the heavy duty van with bigger splined drive shaft , but has been supplied a thinner drive shaft with smaller splines that is not driving in the diff/gearbox gears. Accurate information may help us try to guide better.
If OP has the details from the Vin plate including it's weight capacities, maybe we can confirm if a heavy duty van or not etc. I am a little surprised that OP says it is a 2.5 as at 1997 most were the 2.8, is it possible as a camper build it was done on an earlier chassis with a later registration? Wheel diameter etc. also.
The data manuals I have are related to Torque specifications,engine settings, oils etc. data used by mechanics servicing and repairing, plus cam belt timing manual details and the like. I relied on the Dealers to supply the correct parts based on Vin . Numbers etc.:)
