We have a 2015 Ram promaster 3500 with the 3 liter Ducato diesel. In Canada its a bit of a rare bird so I thought a Fiat Forum might have a bit more info. The van is great but the instrumentation is a bit poor. When I need DEF fluid the light goes on. Not always convenient. Same with oil change. My Honda will give me the percentage of life left in my oil. Is there an OBD reader which can access DEF levels and maintenance status? I may resort to a dipstick for the DEF! Open to any suggestions, thanks.

I can't help with the instrumentation issue, and I have no personal experience with DEF as it's not used in most diesels here in the UK.

However, oil level should not be dropping, and draining and replacing it should be part of the regular servicing (ever x miles/km). I'd assume that there is a range limitation on the DEF too, surely a certain amount of DEF will always cover roughly the same distance? Is this not also part of the regular servicing?

Regardless of what lights the dash in any car may or may not show, it should form part of your weekly checks to manually inspect the fluid levels.

Welcome to the forum btw :)

Hi fiat uk not using def ,I’m not sure what engine management the ram vehicle if it’s the same as we have I can tell you this first the oil level sensor are not always accurate you should rely on dip stick ,
Next all our Ducato have an oil wear degradation counter in engine management program that counts down from 27 to 29k this requires using lap top to reset when oil is changed if not reset the oil light flashes when 1st start up if still not reset eventually it will go to limp mode,we also have to reset service counter in instrument cluster , on 2015 ducato you can check oil wear and service mile count down on control pad to right of steering wheel right hand drive!!the button says mode on it ,has this vehicle got Bosch management system with magneti marelli instrument cluster ? Our instrument clusters say magneti marelli on back I think engine management in 3.0litre is Bosch edc17cp system should be sticker on control unit

I thought Adblue was a type of DEF [Diesel Exhaust Fluid] and used extensively in the UK? The handbook for the vehicle should state the amount remaining when the lamp and warning message first comes on. There are further messages before the ECU takes action as listed in the handbook. See page 75 of the handbook Owner/Downloads/2015-RAM-ProMaster-UG-6th.pdf

It is on most uk manufactures now but fiat achieved Euro 5 and 6 on pre and post injection however fiat don’t use 3.0litre engine in Euro 6 vehicles, we do see Peugeot vans which is same van as Ducato Euro 6 they got add blue tank and require top up at service Peugeot Euro 5 with 3.0litre and 2.2 engine use 5th injector on exhaust to increase combustion temp so news to me that 3.0litre being used with def you learn something every day thank you,

Thanks for all the input! Interesting that the DEF not used in Europe. Yes I have lights that come on when there is around 500 miles left in the DEF tank and then a sort of countdown to a partial power as the tank gets near empty. The range of the tank is quite variable depending on driving conditions. As for the oil change alert, on further reading the manual states the oil must be changed every 6 months or 16000 km whichever comes first regardless of the alert message. The 6 month will work well for me since it is a travel van and I won't go more than 20,000 km in a year.
I have had many diesel vehicles over the years and this one is completely different. No black smoke and no diesel smell. This is a 20' camper van and I have averaged 10.2 l/100 km over 28,000 km.

DEF (AdBlue) IS used in europe. All New HGV's use it as do many cars (VW Mercedes for starters) Fiat don't use it as far as I know. My favorite programme Multiecuscan does support some Dodge vehicles but the biggest is the Journey. You could ask them if they will add your RAM to the list.
