It was great to chat to everyone at the meet about how they came to own a B, whch led to conversations about what we all had before. Seeing LRB's Beetle pic, and finding out that Silverbarchetta used to have a DeLorean, made me think that it would be interesting to know what everyone has had up 'til now, along with a few stories! So I'll go first, and get my blushes out the way up front . . .

1. Fiat 124 (what became a LADA) estate, in cattle-shed grey that my Dad mixed up in a tin from various leftovers. Can't remember the reg. Cost £90.

2. Orangey-red Toyota Corolla P reg that allegedly ran on three-star, but then the engine blew up. Cost £75.

3. Emerald green metallic T reg Austin Allegro estate. The one with the long window down the side that looked like a hearse. Had so many engine leaks it used to get through more oil than petrol! Also had leaks on one side on the hydrolastic suspension so always looked lop-sided! Cost £70.

4. White-and-rust-coloured T reg Mk2 Ford Escort which got through a dodgy MOT thanks to my Dad welding the two front wings together with a strip of angle-iron, after I'd driven it from Derby to Wiltshire in the middle of the night with no MOT, tax or Insurance (Alan, you didn't see that - and it was in about 1991!). Cost £200.

5. Almost-new white Austin Maestro, a brief foray into company-car land at an early age which lasted six months, followed by redundancy and the need to go out and buy . . .

4. Metallic Green S reg Morris Marina Coupe (with tan leather interior no less). Bought in the dark in a rain storm when I committed the cardinal sin of not checking for reverse gear. Consequently had to drive it round for six weeks without and just be careful where I parked! Cost £90 - sold it for £125!

5. Custard-coloured W reg Opel Ascona which never ran properly and is the only banger I didn't make a profit on when I sold it!

Followed by (less excitingly as I had actually started to earn some money):

6. Red D reg (prefix) Mk 2 Vauxhall Cavalier, which was shunted up the back end, written off, then the insurance company changed its mind so we had it for two more years, then when we tried to sell it we couldn't because it was still listed as written off!

7. Red H reg Mk 3 Vauxhall Cavalier. Boring but functional.

8. Pale blue L reg Metallic Vauxhall Corsa (in my 'mummy's-runaround' years).

9. Red N reg Rover 400 Tdi (not my idea, I blame the ex hubby).

Then back to company cars again . . . .

10. Dark Green 2 litre M reg Mk 3 Vauxhall Cavalier that went like a bomb and did 400+ miles to a tank of petrol!

11. Burgundy R reg Daewoo Leganza. No laughing OK, it was the only one on my (limited-budget) company car list that had air-con and a 6-Cd autochanger! Have to say actually it wasn't all that bad . . .

12. Black T reg C class Mercedes (big old square one) which was great, right up 'til the point that I fell asleep at the wheel and turned it into a short wheelbase version, by running it into the back of a gas truck at a roundabout.

Then back out of company-car world again:

13. Black X reg BMW 320 Diesel - gorgeous car, would have another any day. Had to sell it when I set up the business though, and replace it with . . .

14. T reg dark green 2 litre diesel Vauxhall Vectra. Awful thing but needs must :)

15. After business got better - a T reg Burgundy Audi A4 2.5 Tdi. Great car. Just about to sell it if anyone's interested? (and still reading!)

16. And then of course the gorgeous Barchetta. Took me a while but I finally got some taste!!

17. Replacing the Audi with a brand new (also bright blue, much to ISTTR's disgust) Peugeot 307cc, thanks to his business contacts!!

Anyone else care to waste half an hour charting their own history??!

1985 Talbot Alpine. Probably the worst example of Simca/Chrysler/Roots engineering. Puke yellow and driven into the ground..I was a double glazing sales rep at the time in London.

Citroen GS Club Special (rock bottom basic version) car with the strange hydogas suspension that went up and down on a lever where the handbrake would normally be.

2 x Ford Escorts. Dull as ditch but did the business.

Opel Vecta (reps car for a rep)

Skoda Felicia (yes indeed, bought new and did 150k miles and only needed servicing and a timing chain..10/10) Debt collecting in inner city Dublin doesn't need a flash car.

1 Fiat Coupe 20V non Turbo
I Fiat Stilo.
1 Fiat Coupe 20VT, chipped, FMIC, bigger turbo etc 330HP.
1 Barchetta.

1.car:
1984 Uno 55 S, (light grey) that became a 85 S a dark and cold winterday. :) Will most likely use this one for Corsa Italiana, a racing-series for italian cars over 15 years old.

2.car:
1987 Uno Turbo i.e. (639 Grigio) Love this car! Has done 250 000km, but still going strong! On my way home from picking up the Barchetta the turbo broke, but other than that it's in very good shape. All original - no mods allowed!

3.car:
2001 Barchetta. (Rosso Corsa, black leather, hardtop.) Driven 11000km since June, and I love every meter!

My goal is to keep every car I ever love. So far so good. Counting 3 in the garage. :)

Mines pretty dull as there isn't many too mention but anyway,

1. X reg Punto. bog standard model bought 2nd hand, one year old. light green. Excellent 1.2 thrashable engine though.

2. 53 Stilo. Bought new (the depreciation makes for great tax benefits on the tax return though lol). 3 door dynamic 1.6 in steel grey. Still got it. Has it minor faults but I do love it and it's never let me down. Bit bashed and sorry looking down one side at the moment but the culprit didn't stop to leave their details. Just seems to be the way these days.

3 T reg B:worship:

I've never been able to afford a car before (musician...)...  So, so far I've only borrowed my parents' and girlfriend's cars - Ford Transit, Suzuki Swifts, Toyota Corolla and Lancia Thema V6. All of them, except the Lancia, were obviously boring...

I'm not touching this one since this is my forst car. I am a motorcycle enthusiast also. I now have a Kawasaki Ninja - 600cc. I previously owned a '99 Ducati 748, a Honda NSR, and an Aprilia RS. Any other motorbikers here?:D

1st Car. Fully restored 1979 Mini Pickup in BL Sandglow yellow 1100cc with minilites deseamed front and stick on numberplate. Bought from my next door neighbour, who had done all the work, for £1000. Value now would be £3000 + Actually sold for £500 after crashing it into the back of a Saab.

2nd Car. The mother-in-law's 1995 Ford Fiesta maroon colour. £Free. Ended its life in scrapyard when car 3 came along.

3rd Car. Neon Blue 1996 Citroen ZX 1.4i. Best £300 I have ever spent. Silent engine but noisy otherwise. Great over speedbumps, always fails its MOT but never lets us down otherwise. Great numberplate if you own a library and have a visual impairment - L818BRY. Now the wife's car following the arrival of Car 4.

4th Car. 2000 Barchetta with leather and no ABS. My newest, fastest and most expensive motoring adventure yet. And also must fun!

Ok, here goes. The list is not that long but [I think] fairly interesting. I've always been a bit of a car freak:D

1. 1970 Triumph Herald 13/60 convertible. My first car:) I loved it but eventually decided it wasn't practical enough for a 800 mile round trip to Uni in Scotland. It was nearly 30 years old!

2. 1985 VW Golf GTI Mk2. What a car. My first taste of performance:devil: It would red-line so easily in 5th and yet give nearly 40mpg. I sold it with over 180k miles on the clock still going strong. Indestructable.

3. 1965 Volvo 122S. It was bought on a whim as I always fancied these Volvo Amazons and it was in beautiful condition. I drove it mainly as a second car but it felt so much more modern than it was. Incredibly well engineered for the 1960s.

4. 1982 DeLorean DMC-12. Ever since I watched Back to the Future as a seven year old I was completely smitten by DeLoreans. Then, when as an adult, I realised I could actually buy one, I couldn't stop myself:D. I had it for 3 years and took it to the South of France twice. Nothing on the road produces as much astonishment in passers by as a DeLorean:eek: I loved this car so much and was distraught when I had to sell it to go back to Uni:cry: I will definately buy another one day.

5. 1998 Alfa Romeo 145 cloverleaf. An amazing underrated fast car. My everyday drive for a few years - awsome to drive with an engine noise to die for. Very expensive to run though - £600 timing belt change:eek:

6. 1995 Volvo 480 Celebration. One of very the last made, with all the toys. I was always quite fond of these cars and it was quite a sensible 'back to Uni' car. Very comfortable and reliable while still quirky. Not the most exciting drive though. Still have it though haven't used it in ages.

7. 2000 Fiat Barchetta. Enough said:D

I've gone all misty-eyed now:cry:

All-time favourite? The Merc - a big, daft, overblown car, brought a smile to my face every time I drove it. Since I moved it on, it's been up for sale at a stealer's for years at a ridiculously inflated price.

Love-hate relationship? The Alfa - fantastic when it was working properly, annoying when it frequently wasn't. Got written off by a maniac on the Woodhead Pass - wasn't SuperSpotter driving like a tw*t again was it?

Current love? The b - giving me almost as much pleasure as the Merc did, though beginning to feel a little bit like the Alfa. Got the facelift suspension rumble, which I really must get looked into again. Bought as a now-or-never thing a couple of years ago when I was fast approaching 50 with two teenage kids to educate. The first is off to uni this September, so there might be a 20K miler, 4-year-old RED b on the market then. Watch this space.

Well here goes
My first car was a Austin A35 with rod brakes, then I passed my test and got a Ford Escort MK1, This was when I learned how to weld just to keep the thing on the road, also a couple of engine swaps were required.
For a short time a had a Rover 90 great car Leather trim, but a huge thirst for petrol meant it had to go. Next was a Triumph Vitesse but I was starting to attract the attentions of the local police, so I got myself a Renault 10 unfortunately I bent the half shafts so that went to the scrap yard . Then went into a Mini period Had 4 of them, until I saw a Bedford dormobile this was my mode of transport for the summer of 79.Drove around in a Morris Marina 1.3 TC for a couple of years, again using my welding skills until that to went to the scrap yard. Kept with a Morris i (Moggy 1000)but this time an ex post office van this was a great car, Next was a VW Derby, I have to say that this was a really nice motor the previous owner had looked after it from new, unfortunately some b ran in to me so that was a right off. A Talbot Solara was my next mod of transport and despite Talbot's reputation for rust problems the Solara was a nice comfy car. A Volvo 360 was the next car. Then a Citroen Berlingo Both these cars were more my wife’s for her business. A had decided that a wanted to build a car my first kit was based on a Lotus 7, I built this up to rolling chassis stage and sold it on next was a Morgan look a like that I built and ran for a couple of years until I was offered more money than my wife would let me refuse, so that went. My next toy was a Smart car, this I had remapped lowered springs fancy wheels all the usual stuff. Then I was doing an event in Germany and I was offered a lift back to my Hotel the car was a Barchetta
Our family car at the moment is a Suzuki Grand Vitara also got a Scooter a Gilera 180 another Italian job

Didn't realise I had owned so many cars

Ok, Had a few in my time, some good and some bad, but always made them better than when i first bought them.

The cars that i can remember.

1st car after passing test in 1987. yellow/orange talbot sumbeam paid £250 for it.

2nd. blue Mk2 1980 1.6 ford escort, modded with recaro seats and rs alloys.
liked this car until i hit a metal fence and they wrote it off.
was YOUNG & FOOLISH!:D

3rd and one of my favourites silver mk1 VW golf GTI convertible. took this car to cyprus when my parents emigrated there. Modded with fast cam, lowered, compomotive alloy wheels. was a great looker, clean, fast and what fun with the great weather there. the girlys loved it too . :D sold it for good money to start my own business.

4th, red susuki Jeep for a few months, Blew the engine. to slow for me. (n)

5th, white Alfa romeo, funny thing cant remember which one, sounded great but lots of headaches, things going wrong all the time.

6th. back to an mk2 Escort, what a nitemare this turned out to be. signal yellow 2.0ltr pinto with twin40 webers X.PACK wide box arches.

Got lots of looks with this one. BRIGHT LOUD & LEARY! named it MELLOW YELLOW.
I piled so much money into this one but was never very lucky with it.
modded with cam, exuast system, ported, gas flowed head and bigger webbers but blew the bottom end a couple of times, had a few unfortunate prangs. body kit never repaired properly and had to see it go when i spotted the next one for sale.

7th, and one of my all time favourites. THE WILD THING ! Signal orange original ford mk2 Rs2000. one of the very last one made in 1981 in germany. bought new by a rich guy who had it built to full group one rally spec at a cost of £14,000. striped out with roll cage, harnesed, ZF atlas LS axle , quaif straight cut gear box, Wild sprint CAM 8/900 REVS , Twin 48 webbers, fuel cut off. Strengthend suspension, sump guard. it had the lot.

I remember going to see it and the guy not being able to start it because it had not been in use for a while, fuel pipes had perished and had a flat battery.

i had to go back the next day while he could sort these bits out but new in my mind that i was definately going to by it. It was a one owner straight car that had been professionaly built.

Next day, after a phone call saying it had been started i shot down there

and WOW!:D what a ROAR! and but then when i tried to drive it. i couldnt.

The car was designed and built for off road rally use. The camshaft would only rev between 3500 revs to 8000/9000 .

The idea to keep up torque and power in the higher rev range when rallying.

ALL New to me.

we switched over for him to drive it and then POW WOW:eek::eek:

The car took off, slammed me into the seat and what a RUSH!! :D

Anyway i could write a whole book about this one , but i did buy it.

eventualy took it back to road use by changing cam and diff but was stiil quick 0-60 in 5.2 sec. 1/4 mile 11..2 secs

could do standing donuts, spin in 4th gear. ABSOLUTELY ALSOME .
THE WILD THING!! would have it back tommorrow if i could.

Sold it when i returned to the UK in 1996.

8th/9th 10th.... .cavalier, few golfs, pergoet, forget how you spell that.

Last April a new Audi silver A3 2.0 FSI when i remorgaged but gave that to the X as part settlement (n)

And now the B that i nearly gave up on but plan to keep (y)
