Got a call from a friend last week to say his partners' Clio automatic had just been condemned to £2500's worth of work! Don't know which garage she took it too but that sounds like crazy money, it only went in with brake failure.

Anyway, he asked me if I could look out for another car for her, then said the magic words " it can even be a Panda" :D.

I explained that I possibly had a suitable vehicle, it was a Panda, and it was even auto ( he didn't realise they made them ), but it had been on SORN for the last month, I hadn't sorted the dodgy paintwork on the drivers wing, and it had what I believed was a noisy cambelt tensioner.

I emailed some pics over and got the (y) anyway, "could I deliver it to Chelsea on Sunday?"

So guess what I was doing on my bank holiday weekend. Fortunately, I had a cambelt kit and a can of spray paint ready, so taxed it on the Saturday morning, changed the cambelt in the afternoon, rubbed down and painted the wing Sunday, delivered in the evening.

The wing didn't come out too badly considering, I'd have prefered to have two cans of paint so that I could have put more on and really polished it back, but it came out ok, certainly a vast improvement on before.

When I bought the car a little while ago some of you might remember that it would not initially engage gear without a few revs from the engine, but once it had it was fine for the rest of the journey. Well it had been laid up since Brooklands and the rest must have done it good, as now the problem has gone completely, all by itself. I had to move it a couple of times during last month, then quite a bit over the weekend (incuding taking it to London) and each time it drove perfectly. The previous owners had been to a garage who had diagnosed it needing a new gearbox at £1000! I think they had mistakenly thought that the noisy cambelt tensioner was a failing component in the gearbox, either that or they just couldn't be bothered to investigate it properly so decided, 'lets change all of it'.

Hilary is now the new owner and it will be living with her in it's own garage, soon to be heated :), in Hastings. Hilary is quite a nervous driver so will only use it for short trips, therefore the 44,000 current mileage will increase at a very slow rate.

I've said I will look after it for her, so once a year I'm guaranteed a short holiday in Hastings, round about mot time :).

Here's a couple of pics before it left for the seaside, good side only ;)...

Early reports are that Hilary already loves it!

It won't be my last Selecta, that's for sure.

Looks good, glad its gone to a good home. Maybe I am sad but I like to see the bad bits too

Also careful you dont end up servicing all the pandas you sell, sounds like you have enough of your own!

Si

Ok, just for you Si, here's a before and after of the bad side. Don't let anyone else see though........

This was it as I bought it. Apparantly, a couple of years ago it went in for it's mot and an old boy got in to drive it onto the ramp, but the lightening acceleration took him by surprise and he drove it into the ramp post!
The wing had been repaired but the lacquer had gone funny causing what you can see above. Also the corners of the bumper kept popping off the fixing bolts. It was a pretty poor repair to be honest, I wouldn't have been satisfied if it were mine at the time.
So, after a tin of cellulose paint ( all the original is base coat and clear ) this is what I ended up with..........

Not great, but a big improvement.

I also found that the bumper brackets had been left bent which meant that the bumper was mounted too far back, which was causing it to pop off the side fixings, so I adjusted :p this as well. Why the garage that caused the damage couldn't do it I don't know .

I do charge for working on my ex Pandas, so it's not necessarily something to be avoided. ;)

I may even see it on one of my trips to Hastings.

Would be great if you did Kev, be sure to give Hilary a wave (y).

I like the way you always seem to be able to look after your old Panda's :p :)

Haha! I make it a condition of the sale Jon ;).

Hey, nice work!

I'm currently in the middle of polishing my Marbella boot lid after two unsuccessful attempts to repaint it. Third time is marvelous!

First time: Too rough a paper,
Second time: Not enough paint,
Third time i made sure it was good layered. Sprayed showing primer, sanded, sprayed full, sanded, sprayed- next polish :D
It's not going to be perfect as it's just generic black from Halfords but it's not too bad..

By the way, do Marbella's have brake servo's? I can't see one anywhere- Obviously not..

Looks good, I'dve shown that off right away. Good thing I coaxed it out of you, it deserves some FF credit! :D

Blurredman, regarding the brake servo marbellas dont have servos. They are on the right hand side of the engine bay beneath the spare wheel but only on mk2 pandas and not even all of them.

Cheers,
Si

The first time I drove my 1000 Selecta I was gobsmacked at how much quicker it was to my previous Panda. I was generally always beating much bigger engined cars off the line. Mine only had 45BHP but the later 1.1 Selecta was pushing out 57BHP so i'm lead to believe. I'd love a 1.1 Selecta but they're so rare these days :(

You see them popping up on eBay fairly often (y)

Just a case of them being very rare in good nick!

Bump.

The reason for bumping the two threads relating to this car is that I've just bought it back. :)

Hilary hardly used it during her ownership, short trips at the weekends only, so it's pretty much as it was when she took delivery apart from one major issue.......the gearbox.

The original issue had become more frequent so she put it in to her local garage to be looked at. They went straight in the deep end, removed the gearbox, sent it off to a gearbox specialist  who stripped it right down only to say that they couldn't find anything so she needs a new one. £1000 thank you very much

I'm sure that all it needed was new brushes in the clutch unit but now it's in so many pieces, some of which are missing, there's no chance of getting it back together.

With the rest of the car being so good it would be a shame to scrap it so I'm going to convert it to manual, at some point . It's an an 1108 spi so should make a nice car when done.

Numpties! Well sounds like another 16v project to me
